Could I Pet Your Dog? (Mike)
You were taking a stroll down down the block on a warm and breezy sunny day. The feeling of the sun against your skin combined with smell of freshly cut grass, the sound of birds chirping and the sight of flowers blooming made you feel like you could be in a movie. You didn't go on walks as often as you would’ve liked, but you were certainly glad you did on that day.
As if the day couldn't get any better, heading in your direction was a man walking one of the nicest looking dogs you've ever seen. And if a cute dog wasn't enough to make you happy, you noticed that the guy walking it was pretty nice looking, too. He was fairly tall and slender looking and had dark hair that was swept to the left side of his face. Looking at the two of them, you weren't even entirely sure if you'd rather pet the dog or the guy, but you figured it would be more acceptable to ask if you could pet the dog.
As you got closer to each other, you both slowed down. You did so along with smiling and staring at the dog to send a subtle hint that you wanted to pet it, and he did so because he noticed your signals.
“Could I pet your dog?” you asked, looking up at the boy with pleading eyes.
“Course you can, he loves attention,” the boy replied with an euphonic southern accent, which only made you wish you’d said “you” instead of “your dog” even more.
You kneeled down next to the dog and began to stroke its head. You couldn't help but smile at the creature who looked absolutely thrilled to have someone just looking at it. You just loved the pure joy that radiated from dogs.
“He’s so soft,” you said quietly as you continued to slide your hand from his head down its back.
“Here—” the boy kneeled next to you and gently took your hand, moving it to a spot near the dog’s ear “—he loves when you scratch right there.”
As soon as his hand touched yours, a surge of butterflies swarmed throughout your body. His hand was soft and warm, and he touched you so tenderly it didn't make you flinch or jitter at all. You were certainly glad that you could play off your ever-widening smile as a response to the dog and your ever-reddening face as a response to the heat.
“What’s his name?” you asked, eyes still focused on the dog, trying to keep the conversation going and attempting to hide the fact that you were now way more interested in this guy than his dog.
“Well, his name’s Winston, and even though you didn't ask, mine’s Mike,” he responded, and you could see the small smile on his face from the corner of your eye.
Caught slightly off guard, you turned your head towards him and struggled to think of a response, but ended up going with, “Well, that was my next question. And I’m Y/N, by the way.”
Once you were done petting the dog, you both stood up. You wobbled a bit upon standing due to a slight head rush because of the heat and because your legs had stiffened from being in the kneeling position for so long. Noticing this, Mike took hold of your arm until you were steadied and let go as soon as you seemed okay.
“Woo, head rush,” you exclaimed, pushing your hair back.
“You need a drink or somethin’?” he asked, a look of mild concern in his eyes.
“No, no, I’m good, thank you.” You smiled, now fully regretting not asking if you could pet him instead of the dog.
“All right. So you live around here?” he inquired.
“Yeah, my house is right up the street over there.” You pointed to the direction of your home.
“Cool, I also live on this street, right over there.” He pointed to a house across the street and a little to the left of where you were standing. “Actually, I should really be goin’, but maybe we’ll see each other around and we can hang out or something.”
“Sounds good, but only if you bring your dog,” you joked, giving him a mock serious expression.
“Will do.” He smiled, and with that, he walked off toward his house.
You continued your stroll and glanced over your shoulder a few times to check out Mike some more. Damn, was he attractive. You cursed yourself for not taking him up on his offer of a drink, but forgave yourself when you realized that he certainly seemed interested in you and that it definitely wouldn't be the last you saw of him. And upon further analysis of the previous three minutes’ events, you noted that his nonchalant touches were more likely his version of petting you. And with that thought in mind, you had to restrain yourself from skipping like a cartoon character and simply imagined dozens of potential future encounters with Mike…and his dog.
