It's been a wild ride since April 1, 2011, when tumblrs first heard of my work at Dawn of Play through awesome blogs such as [it8bit](http://www.it8bit.com/post/4259702226/monkeylabour) and [Game & Graphics](http://gameandgraphics.com/post/4413092333/monkey-labour-dawn-of-play-for-iphone-2011). Everyone's support for our latest release, [Dream of Pixels](http://dawnofplay.com/DreamOfPixels/), has been amazing and we can't thank you more. Oh, wait, yes we can! We made our first two games, Monkey Labour and Twinoo (now rocking the puzzle & educational charts pretty high), free to celebrate the launch of Dream of Pixels. Go old-school or get smart. Or both! Download from iTunes App Store: * [**Monkey Labour**](https://itunes.apple.com/app/monkey-labour-perfect-recreation/id406314711?mt=8) * [**Twinoo**](https://itunes.apple.com/app/twinoo-brain-training-test/id410791441?mt=8) Grab them while they're F-R-E-E!
Hey, WEEKEND! It's been a long day yesterday at my day job. Dream of Pixels (on the left) is about a week away from being sent to the App Store so I'm very excited to come back to [Dawn of Play](http://dawnofplay.com/) next week. Expect more news from the "game developer by day" part of my life as we near the November release. Not far now, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! It's also an exciting time for Retronator, since I'm answering a really interesting interview today. In addition I'll be finishing my second album cover, which came out pretty nice, so I'm looking forward to sharing that with you soon. Also: BEARD! :] Hope you guys get to do something fun/creative over the weekend as well, yeah?
Hitler finds out Monkey Labour didn't sell well
I've mentioned that the postmortem for the first game I worked on at Dawn of Play was published on Gamasutra yesterday. This video shows how the sales numbers were received with the head of the project.
That wednesday when more stuff happened in one day than in a whole week
It's been a while since I did a text post so buckle your seatbelt and put on the reading helmet, because I've got a lot to write about.
1. 72 Pins NES carts
Happy surprise, smilyface! :D
The amazing people that are Pauline Acalin and Ron Workman run a literally NEStalgic art project called 72 Pins. I've been a fan from the beginning and secretly hoped that one day I'll be good enough to be among the artists that contribute the designs.
After my pixel art poster got some attention Pacalin granted me just that wish and I pixeled & painted two special edition designs for 72 Pins' first art show. Only five were made to buy, but they were nice enough to send me my own souvenirs as well. :D
So freakin' cool! I think they have just one left for S&S and a couple for FEZ.
On to more stuff in the mailbox this morning ...
2. Spreadshirt tees
Not so happy surprise, sadface. :(
To illustrate the frustration better, here's evidence #1:
I tested out two different printing techniques, flex on the left and digital print on the right. Flex design is cut from colored foil and pressed on the shirt so you have to prepare your vector artwork carefully to compensate for this process. Even though I did, the errors on placement are just too big to tolerate.
The digital print on the other side is nowhere near as vibrant as I'd like for these. They do warn against this, but the design's already almost at maximum saturation. I don't think their printer could make much better.
Furthermore, the distance from the neckline to the design also varies greatly. It's an inch lower on the flex design, making it go just below my chest when worn. Not cool.
So yeah. Thank god for that disclaimer that went with the designs. After seeing the actual results I've closed the spreadshirt shop without a thought. For the high price the quality would have to be amazing. Here it's a failure or passable at best.
But speaking about tees ...
3. Tribute Merchandise update response
Moving form the physical mailbox into my e-mail inbox, the Tumblr folder was full of likes and reblogs of my Society6 pixels. A couple of you even bought the new shirts and hoodies. Thank you all so much! I don't make these to get money, but put them online so I can order them for myself, see?
So if anyone else gets them it gives me a really awesome feeling. And it does buy me a beer or two, so I owe you one!
4. Matej Jan, now a published author an Gamasutra
I mentioned this earlier, but it's worth stating again: Gamasutra, THE webpage for game developers, has finally published a feature I wrote. I printed whole folders of articles from that site as a teenager and now there's one with my name on it! :O :D
Yeah, right there, on the right!
You can see the news article with a summary here and the full article here. It's four pages long, but goes into all the joyful and painful details of launching your own iPhone game = my life in 2011 basically.
I'll close with what my colleague said after seeing the article (I'm dramatizing, but the essence is there): "Fuck yeah our faces are in a Gamasutra article!"
Fuck yeah indeed!
