Holy jehoshaphat - Slumberland Records is on a heater. I think I remember Mike Schulman (head of the label) saying 2025 would be busy, but I didn't imagine this output or this quality. Mike has always had his finger on the C86/Flying Nun pulse of music, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised with his string of recent preorders.

Autocamper were covered here a little over a year ago with their release on Safe Suburban Home. Since then, they released a cassette on Slumberland, and now a full length, "What Do You Do All Day?"

One Bandcamp write up mentioned that Autocamper make music "hat would make even Stephen Pastel blush". I think "Again" does sound like The Pastels, or a "Northern English iteration of Calvin Johnson". The Vaselines were also name-dropped. Finally, I would like to mention former labelmates Captain Starlet and Monnone Alone.

When I mentioned Mark Monnone yesterday, it made me remember that his project, Monnone Alone (Melbourne, Australia), has a new LP coming out. Aside from being a great person and the mastermind of Lost & Lonesome Recording Co., Mark is an outstanding pop musician in his own right. Micah and I saw it firsthand when Monnone Alone opened for The Zebras years ago in Sacramento. Additionally, he was a founding member of The Lucksmiths. Special guest appearances on the new album include Steph Hughes (Dick Diver) and Gary Olson (The Ladybug Transistor).

"Dry Doubt" has a definite Pavement-sounding guitar and feel. But Mark's voice and melodies are all his own. "Ways To Wear My Hair" was originally released back in 2023 on a lathe-cut from Royal Mint (Finland).

Bands like The Slow Summits and Chime School ply a similar sound to Monnone Alone. Meritorio Records and Repeating Cloud will be releasing "Here Comes the Afternoon" in early May 2025.

Monnone Alone- Here Comes The Afternoon (Lost & Lonesome)

I'm pretty sure I listened to Monnone Alone's last album, 2021's Stay Foggy at least 2000 times, that is how much I loved it (the one before it, 2019's Summer of the Mosquito, wasn't too shabby either). 

While Stay Foggy was an all-over-the-place, scrappy pop record, Here Comes the Afternoon, is more of a traditional rock/pop record. Perhaps a bit less lo-fi, but Monnone (who as you know is Mark Monnone former bassist for Aussie pop legends The Lucksmiths)and his crew of Louis Richter on guitar, Joe Foley on bass, and Gus Franklin on drums (and a host of friends) aren't afraid to take chances and go off-road a bit.

First single, "Dry Doubt," kicks things off most righteously out of the gate, while "Storybook Life" soars to new pop heights and "Brain Stone" has some cool, chippy electronics. 

Elsewhere, "St Mary's Pass" has some nifty guitar work (and horns!) as does the equally gregarious "Loose Terrain." And the loose groove of "Mr Nobody" is among my faves here as well. 

Here Comes The Afternoon is a classic rock/pop record that needs to be devoured over many listens. Might it overtake the amount of listens of Stay Foggy? Stay tuned!

Greg Brady and the Anchors are a Brisbane, Australia band that having been making great indie pop/rock music for a while (the Bandcamp page mentions 1990). Brady was the anchor of The Zebras. Micah and I were lucky enough to see them with Monnone Alone many years ago.

Bands like Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Ducks Ltd. owe a debt to Greg Brady. Hopefully he's been afforded "legendary" status by the Australian indie music scene.

While "weights and measures" isn't quite the driving pop of The Zebras, it still jangles and hooks (listen to "janglepophub") its way into your heart. At times the music approximates the feel of Richard Davies.

I was listening to the new Slumberland release from Chime School. Great jangle pop that could have been on the Strum & Thrum compilation.

As I was listening, I kept thinking about Monnone Alone (Melbourne, Australia). The vocals and guitar on Chime School really do sound like the best work of Mark Monnone over the past decade. I realized we didn't post about his new release "Stay Foggy" (available on Lost and Lonesome, as well as:)
