Number 25 and murphonty
25. “Sorry, I spout out random facts when I’m nervous.”- Murphonty
“Did you know that on Mars the sunsets would be blue?” Monty has been quiet today, so Murphy is a little surprised to hear this.
“I don’t know anything about space,” he says, which is true, but he’s covering for the fact that he thinks this is actually pretty cool. “Think we should detour? Go there instead?”
Monty smiles. “Maybe not. It has these really big dust storms.”
“Wow. You are just full of it today.”
“Sorry, I spout out random facts when I’m nervous,” Monty shrugs. “Old habits.” It’s not like he’s the only one that does this. Bellamy has been spouting nonsense inspirational phrases from day one.
“Well if you’re nervous we’re probably all fucked.” Murphy shifts in his seat to see what Monty’s been poring over for hours. It’s stupid to be jealous of a bunch of wires, but he likes the attention. “Is this rocket stuff?” They’ve been in space for nearly six years, and the delay is getting to everyone. It’s taken this long for Raven and Monty to figure out what to do to fix their ship.
“Yeah,” Monty sighs. “Maybe you shouldn’t be here, I’ll just freak you out and distract myself.” He drops his head into his hands. Murphy stares on sympathetically. Monty’s confidence in his engineering has shrivelled up and died a Hollywood movie death since they got to the Ark. Space is kicking everyone’s ass.
“Hey,” Murphy says, gently pulling one of Monty’s hands free and tracing it with a finger. “Tell me more about the red planet.”
“It’s not actually red,” Monty mumbles. “Up close it’s loads of colours. My dad used to tell me that every time I said Mars was red.”
“Who knew?”
“Well. I did,” Monty says, and for a second there’s a glimmer of his old ego. “I need my hand back. I think I know what to do.”
“The little engineer that could,” Murphy teases, releasing his hand. “Of course you do.”
“Of course,” Monty repeats quietly, then looks up at Murphy and his smile is so lovely that Murphy believes in every single word of inspirational bullshit Bellamy has ever said.

r e s t wasn’t something murphy found easily, the horrors still too fresh in his mind, despite how long ago they happened. sometimes he would wake up in a cold sweat but not a sound would make it past his lips && after a few seconds it was as if nothing at all happened.
he knew how to hide, both himself && his e m o t i o n s.
imagine his surprise then, how easily monty managed to break around the walls && find a place within the crumbling mess of his heart. he patched it up, his hands soothing where everyone else brought pain to.
it was a heady kind of rush && a fear kind of fluttery as well. depending on something just wasn’t what he could do.
which was why when he woke up in monty’s arms, he tried to move away slowly to not rouse him && get out of the tent. he wasn’t the one who got the guy, he was the one who got gutted alive.
you didn’t caress a monster, you stabbed it.
but before he could get away, monty was waking up && smiling at him in a way he paused at. how && why did he look at him like that? like murphy MEANT something. he was going to make up an excuse for leaving, for getting away but lips met his && a gripping hand on his hip - like monty knew && maybe he did, he seemed to read murphy like a book no one else had the translation to.
