"Happy Pride month to my brother."
"What?"
"And those freaky vampires ..."
edgar: well, well, well. glad you finally decided to join us, samson.
sam: how did you know it was me with your back turned??
edgar: i know things.
alan: he said that to everyone that came in before you got here.

"Yeah, man!"
"we got it, come over, dude."
since i love a good amount of angst, here's a scenario:
after high school, sam, edgar, and alan get an apartment together. sam is going to school (for what, he's not exactly sure just yet, but he figures he might as well knock his core classes outta the way while he figures it out). edgar has a job at the local grocery store, stocking shelves and pushing carts. he hates it, but he doesn't have to talk to people all that much and he has an employee discount, so he doesn't complain. alan is a janitor at a auto shop. he knows a little about cars, and finds them interesting. when he was in high school and had just gotten his first truck, sam's grandpa had taken a liking to him and showed him how to keep his junker running. he sort of likes the smell of grease and oil, and watching cars get put back together.
one day, sam returns home from an important final. as soon as he opens the door, edgar explodes at him, screaming, asking why he didn't answer his phone. sam is startled to say the least, and explains that if his phone rings during an exam, it's an instant fail, so he turned it off. he doesn't understand why edgar is so upset; sure, they had a hunt scheduled tomorrow, but nothing tonight.
he pushes past edgar and makes a joke about him waking up on the wrong side of the bed. when edgar doesn't reply, he turns and sees tears on his friend's face.
sam has never, ever seen edgar cry. he is suddenly unaware of the fact that he hasn't seen or heard alan since coming home. a quick glance at the clock confirms that alan should be home by then.
"ed," he asks. "where is alan?"
the question only makes edgar let out a sob, sending sam further into the twilight zone. he has to sit him down on the couch and let him catch his breath for a moment before edgar can finally talk to him.
he explains that he and alan had decided to do a bit of last minute reconnaissance to prep for the following day, just to make sure they knew how many vampires they would be dealing with.
they thought they were parked far enough away. but they were spotted. alan crashed the car in their escape attempt, and there was a fight. edgar managed to stake one of them, but not before she gave alan a hefty dose of her blood.
he tells sam that alan bolted, and edgar had lost him. he came home in hopes that he was there, and when he wasn't, he instead waited for sam to arrive.
sam ends up borrowing a friend's car and they drive around town for a while, searching everywhere for alan. they find him in a park a mile or so away from their apartment.
he tries to explain that it's not safe for him to be around him, that he doesn't want to hurt them, but sam just calls him a drama queen and reminds him that it took mike at least a week to start showing any signs, and that star and laddie had held on for a couple months. "we have time. after that, well, we'll figure it out, bud. we always do."
