"Spanners, also called living bridges, were originally created to guard a certain wizard’s tower, but have since escaped into the wilderness.”  These creatures are living constructs but easily mistaken for giant mimics.  Fortunately they are reluctant to attack and can be friendly with travelers, but if provoked they will buck a person over the edge or open a hole to drop someone straight down into a chasm.  (Mark Nelson, I believe, from the AD&D 2e Monstrous Compendium: Fiend Folio Appendix, RPGA/TSR, 1992)  While most creatures in this MC originated in the 1981 Fiend Folio, this is one of the new 2e additions.

Grimlock, kamadan, and xill -- the Fiend Folio returned in 2e Monstrous Compendium form with Jeff Easley cover art, revised and edited by RPGA members for TSR (ad from Dungeon 35, May/June 1992)  The art here matches the cover art from the actual product, but the mock-up of the cover in the lower corner shows several different details that match the official descriptions better, including the kamadan’s leopard spots and the grimlock’s long, black hair (as a result some reviewers ID the paler shorter-haired cover image as a fog giant).  And if you bought this for the kamadan you’re out of luck -- I can’t find it within this or any other 2e Compendium.
