Chef of the Week : Zach
Oh Zach was ready! He said “i have been waiting for my turn for 76 days, Ms. Deepa,” when he made the shopping list for his Sharing Bag. So on Monday, he brought his Sharing Bag, hung up his jacket and came to the kitchen counter rubbing his hands together - “Shall I make the fruit salad?” and I had to tell him we had to wait till Thursday. “Oh yeah,” he said , “I forgot. But he forgot on Tuesday and Wednesday as well :) When Thursday finally arrived, “ I am so excited to make my fruit salad.”
He needed help with peeling the mangoes and he chuckled when I told him that these were my favorite fruit when I was his age. “Oh, I did not know you were a child,” he said. He then repeated his information to his friends later through the day! He was not a fan of the texture of the mango as he as cutting it and he tried to minimize contact. After the mango came the kiwi fruit. We both exclaimed at the exquisite pattern when he halved the fruit and then quartered and diced them.
The red seedless grapes came next, as he separated them from the stalks, Zach said “Haiyaaah!” each time as though he were executing a martial arts move. In between these exclamations, he said speaking to himself, “Yeah, I have to take the stalks out so my friends don’t choke.”
When I showed him a shortcut to pull the greens off the strawberries, he said, “Wow, that’s a cool trick,” and proceeded to take care of the strawberries, culling the and then quartering them.
He tossed the salad multiple times and when he was finally satisfied, he said, “Yeah...it’s ready.” It was indeed - the mangoes were a huge hit with his friends as was the whole salad!
