Montymuzz, western au
The train screeched loudly, the commotion enough to wake the lone passenger inside, as it slowed to a stop at the end of the line. When it finally went still, Josh settled his hat on his head, shrugged into his threadbare coat, and pulled his battered suitcase closer. He took one final breath to steel himself then stepped out onto the platform.
When he’d left California for Florida a few years back, he’d thought that’d be the end of frontier life for him. But civilized life hadn’t suited him much neither. His money’d ran out, so he ran back west. He figured maybe he’d get lucky this time.
The summer sun rose warm over the tracks he’d just ridden down, casting buttery yellow rays across the compacted dirt track from the train station to the ramshackle town, lighting up the dew scattered across the many pine trees like shimmering crystals. He watched his boots as he made his way across the damp wood of the station platform, taking care so as not to slip.
“I wondered how long it’d take you to follow me,” drawled a familiar voice.
Josh looked up in shock, and promptly missed the step down to the ground. He stumbled, but strong hands caught him round the shoulders, pulling him against a fine coat and shirt over a well-muscled chest.
“Wasn’t,” he said, the rumble of laughter emanating from that strong chest enough to stop him from saying more. He pushed himself up to stand on his own two feet, then started down the track towards town.
“Course y’are, Muzz,” said Monty, falling into step beside him. He looked the same as always: brown hair falling round his face, brown eyes glittering with mirth, full lips stretched in an easy grin. Josh wouldn’t admit it, but he’d missed him. “Knew you’d be comin’, after you followed me to Florida.”
“Didn’t follow you there neither,” said Josh, but it sounded untrue even to his ears. Truth was, things’d been easier when Monty’d taken him under his wing. And things fell apart for Josh when Monty moved along and he had to start fending for himself. He hadn’t quite followed Monty here… but he hadn’t not followed him, neither.
“Aww, it’s alright, Muzz. Been saving a deputy badge just for you. Got a spare room for you and everything.”
“Who let you name deputies?” Josh asked with a smile, brushing his shoulder against Monty’s companionably. “Reckon we were runnin’ from the law in Florida, and in California too.”
Monty laughed at that, loud and open. “That’s what makes me such an uncommon good sheriff,” he answered. “I know how these criminal types think. And so do you, which’ll come in handy when you take the job.”
Josh accepted the badge Monty handed him. It glinted when he turned it over, shiny and new. He pinned it to his vest as they passed into the town proper, houses and stores of frontier quality built up along the muddy main drag. There were some folks out and about, even this early in the morning, and movement was visible through some of the windows as the occupants stirred.
“Spare room, eh?” he asked, as Monty led him towards the Sheriff’s Office, a solidly-built two storey near the middle of town.
“Or space in mine, if you’d rather,” said Monty with a wink. He unlocked the door with a flourish and held it open, gesturing for Josh to precede him.
Josh laughed, feeling warmer even than the sunshine pouring around them. Seems like he’d be getting lucky out here after all.
