Moo-Deng: the two-month-old baby pygmy hippo becoming an online giant
made this for a friend. i'm sure there's more of you out there who would appreciate this, though, so I am casting it into the ether. enjoy.
A Tiny Hippo Named Moo-Deng
How did this baby hippo turn the internet into a frenzy? She's super cute and a bouncy baby which is the meaning of her name: bouncy pig. Certainly she's a bundle of joy and people in Thailand are going crazy over her.
But the frenzy has turned into unhealthy and abusive behavior toward a baby animal that normally would never encounter a human in the wild; but because she's in an enclosed environment and she belongs to an endanger species name pygmy hippopotamus, humans are visiting the zoo in masses to see her. Some people inevitably want to touch her, some people are poking her, throwing water at her, talking to her while she's trying to sleep and they all want to take a picture with the baby as if she's a pet or a souvenir.
Another interesting fact is that, if she was in the wild, her mom would have attacked and charged against the humans trying to touch her calf. You just don't mess with hippo moms, they would not hesitate to kill to protect their babies as they're normally very territorial and aggressive animals when they feel threatened.
However that baby is clearly defending her territory and pushing back and even biting the zookeeper (who's responsible for feeding her everyday) and others for poking her. Which makes me very happy because she is setting her boundaries and clearly she's not amused by the humans around her.
I hope one day she will really bite them if they don't stop. I hope she really shops for their hands. I really do. That would teach them a lesson. And that could very much happen because hippos are very unpredictable and tempered animals. But it's a very sad situation. Very very sad.
All of that is altering her normal baby behavior since they spend most of their time sleeping. So all of the harassment is making her more aggressive and she's fighting even the zookeeper. She's trying to bite them and she's rebelling toward them.
We're all worried here in America, because normally people don't behave that way when they visit zoos. Here people are forced to respect animals in enclosed environments or they get kicked out immediately for bad behavior. You can also get arrested or get hefty fine for animal cruelty and abuse.
Fortunately the zoo director is pledging to take action against the abusers. So I am very happy he's taking steps to make that happen and they're limiting the visits to see Moo-Deng to 5 minutes at Khao Kheow Open Zoo. That's great news.
We just hope people understand they're hurting Moo-Deng by not allowing her to feel safe in her enclosed environment. They're stressing her out. They need to let her sleep also since obviously people are picking on her, throwing water and food at her when she's trying to rest, they are pulling her to take pictures and some people are even calling her across the visitor area and interrupting her sleep.
That's pure cruelty since baby hippos need to sleep 16 - 18 hours at least per day, while adults hippos need minimal 10 - 12 hours of sleep per day. They are normally lazy animals and need lots of sleep and rest in their environments. So you can imagine how bad all that harassment is for the health of that baby hippo.
Some animal groups that are outraged at her situation are calling for her release and asking the zoo to stop the abusers. And I am completely in agreement with them. But full release isn't a safe option because she's still a baby and needs her mother.
We trust the zoo and staff enforces more strict rules around her to keep the baby safe from aggressors and bullies, because who doesn't want this cute baby to live a long and healthy life (✿☉。☉)
I'm glad everyone agrees Moo-Deng the hippo is very good.
