What’s good with Moochie?

The clutch shots.

The high socks.

And, of course, the hair.

Who could forget the hair?

Some nights we got the fro.

Some nights we got the rows.

But every single night we got 100% authentic Moochie Norris. His appearance has changed since his days in the league, but his dedication to the game will never go out of style.

Martyn Norris was born to perform. He moved with a swagger and infectious charm, mesmerizing fans around the world with a game that was like jazz – unpredictable and wild, but silky smooth and controlled.

Which is fitting for a man called Moochie. He was given the name by his grandfather, who loved jazz, too, especially Cab Calloway.

The two possessed similar spirits, as you can see.

The retired NBA journeyman has settled down in Houston, where he spent over three-quarters of his NBA career with the Rockets, now sporting a grown and mature salt-and-pepper beard. Nothing on top. Moochie currently coaches at Victory Preparatory Academy, where he and former NBA legend Rodney McCray lead a promising group of young men into the future.

And who better than Moochie to lead the way? In the April 2011 publication of Slam, writer Bonsu Thompson wrote a short account of Norris’s teenage days playing ball. It’s evident that Moochie always had an eye for talent.

“18-year-old Moochie Norris was pushing the rock upcourt and saw a 14-year-old kid, about three inches shorter than him, cutting to the hoop and pointing for an alley. Moochie’s pg instincts obliged. Alley oop completed, Moochie asked the young leaper if his hops were real or just lucky. The confident shorty replied, “Just throw it up and I’ll get it.”

That shorty was none other than Steve Francis, whom Norris helped develop into a 3-time all-star point guard in the early 2000s.

“I was gifted with this talent, and I got to pass it on,” said Norris in a recent interview.

Victory Prep opens its regular season on November 16th, led by highly acclaimed forward Jarred Vanderbilt, who ranks 7th on ESPN 60 for the 2017 class.
