I seen a way older post you made about menstrual cups and was wondering which brand was most comfortable for you and maybe a small review? Been thinking about trying one, but don't know what to do or where to start idk
Hi, I’m not sure I can help - my local pharmacy only has one brand, Mooncup, so I didn’t have a lot of choice. And tbh it feels good? It fits well, it’s sturdy and easy to clean. As you can see from this image -
- there isn’t a lot of difference between the brands (except for Femmycycle, no idea what’s up with that). The long stem in some cups needs to be trimmed, so they all look sort of the same. Personally, I don’t see how the ring could be useful because it’s not a champagne cork or anything - you don’t pull it out, you scrunch it and twist it out.
The one thing I can suggest is that you check your size accurately (it basically depends on your age and whether you’ve given birth or not), boil it before use, and don’t cut the stem until you’re confident with inserting and taking it out again (the stem will be a bit in the way, but it beats the slight IT’S GOING TO GET SWALLOWED AND STAY UP THERE FOREVER panic you’re bound to get for the first five minutes). Using a cup is not difficult, but it does take a bit of practice. Just be sure you pick a quiet moment, find a place you can squat down (don’t do it on the toilet the first few times - use the shower or even squat on the floor on top of a towel or something). Maybe do some breathing exercices first, like this one for instance. You should be well lubricated - think blood, not artificial stuff - so wait for your second or third day - but the cup itself should be clean and dry, otherwise it’ll slip from your fingers. You can wash it with warm water just before you insert it, so it’ll be nice and pleasant. If it doesn’t fit, don’t worry. Remember your vagina is definitely wide enough for a cup, so it’s probably nerves tightening your muscles (it could be a medical condition, but it’s more likely that you’re just tense; if you’re worried about vaginismus, though, please talk with your ObGyn). Just stop, watch a kitten video, remind yourself nothing can happen (it can’t get lost up there, it doesn’t hurt) and try again a couple of times. If it still doesn’t fit, pat yourself on the back, clean it well and try again on a different day. Inserting cups and tampons can take a bit of practice, especially if you’re young or have never had vaginal intercourse, but once you manage it, it’s quick and easy.
There are many great guides out there (just Google ‘how to use a cup’), but if you need anything else feel free to message me or PM me.
Best of luck and congrats on your choice - a cup will change your life!
