Get to know my character. | @moonrasia
01. What does your character’s name mean? Did you pick it for the symbolism, or did you just like the way it sounded?
Vol is a Jungle Troll given name – interesting to note is that troll youths do not have any given names until they’ve earned them in battle. Until such a time, they’re referred to as generic diminutives (such as boy, lad, etc. I’m imagining). The suffix of his name, ‘jin, is one that denotes a tribal chief or elder – seeing as he had this name even before he was the chieftain of the Darkspears, it can be inferred that perhaps the line of ruling is hereditary in the tribe.
02. What is one of your character’s biggest insecurities? Are they able to hide it easily or can others easily exploit this weakness?
I think one of his biggest insecurities was how easily he fell for Garrosh’s ploy leading up to the Dagger in the Dark scenario. In Shadows of the Horde, this is something that comes up more than once – Garrosh had him, and when he was recovering he could not remember why he wasn’t dead. He didn’t have a clue as to how he got to where Li Li found him, and for a long time that, along with other crises faced at the Shado-pan monastery, had him doubting his sense of self. By the time he returned to the Horde, however, he’d worked through that – redefining who “Vol’jin” is and erasing all doubt. The ‘old’ Vol’jin did die in that cave – what has returned to the Horde is a remade troll, and if he has any insecurities they’re near impossible to tell.
03. What would be their favorite physical trait about themselves?
Physical traits are not often something Vol’jin pays attention to, unless sizing up an opponent to gauge the best strategy to fight them. If pressed, however, he will eventually decide on his frame. He’s built larger than most Darkspear but still has that same stealth about him as he did when he was half his size. His movements flow with ease, almost regal – although he wouldn’t likely use those words.
04. What are their favorite traits about their lover? (one psychological and one physical)
Vol’jin canonly has at least one child – a son named Yenniku. Nothing is known about the child’s mother, but judging from Vol’jin’s own personality I feel he’d value honesty and pragmatism in another. As with all he meets, he does not let ‘looks’ judge someone’s character. I’m not sure if he’d have a ‘favorite’ physical trait in his lover. Perhaps her hair, or the slight curve of the tips of her ears.
05. Are they sexually confident or more of the shy type?
Based on what is known of their culture, I don’t imagine that the Darkspear as a tribe put quite as much…symbolism behind sexual activity as society seems to today. To trolls, sex is casual – there are far more meaningful ways one can express true love and affection to another. I’m not saying they’ll just go with anyone they please, but it’s not as frowned upon if they do so when they’re not considered ‘mates.’
Keeping that in mind, Vol’jin has definitely had his share of experience – he’s an attractive prospect for a mate, even before one considers his position as chieftain and now Warchief. He’s confident as far as knowing what to do and how to read his partner, but occasionally things might get awkward, depending on his partner. Things happen. No one is perfect, and he certainly doesn’t claim to be. Any moments like that usually end in laughter on both sides, thankfully.
