Our Project has run very smoothly, Matt and I have worked very well together. I think we’ve both achieved what we wanted from Motion Photography. Matt was able to implement Plank Cam, and I am happy with the effects we achieved with the skater. I’ve worked a bit with video in the past, but ended up getting out of my depth and largely scared off. This unit has been a really good way to get back into video and it’s been very enjoyable. Video is very different from stills work as it requires planning at a more meticulous level. With our project, it could quite easily have been overwhelming to shoot, but we had two planning sessions on location ahead of the shoot in which we were able to walk-through our shots and both come to a common ground on how the project would look and how we would shoot it. I think our project is strong in concept and suits the Smirnoff brand. I do think it does skirt around the brief in some aspects though. Deep down I have reservations about it’s appropriateness on the tube, it’s probably more suited to a cinema. However, the brief did originally mention an alternative project, whilst we didn’t officially follow an alternative brief, I think it should allow us the wiggle room that we need to justify our final outcome. I think Matt and I were both at the point where we were determined to produce something close to what we did and didn’t want to sacrifice our enthusiasm for following the rules a little more rigidly. Technically I think our project lacks a little refinement. The ‘slider’ shot and the skater worked well, but they are ever so slightly bumpy and irregular. I think Matt would argue this suits the tone of the whole film, and I do agree. but those two shots could have been buttery smooth if we had a slider and a more sophisticated system for the panning shot. We also ended up side skirting around the still moving seamlessly into the video, this is because with the Plank Cam arrangement we had to crop out the bottom of the bottle because it was covered in tape, not making a good still. We did have a still of the bottle in the freezer, but frankly, it was crap. Maybe we could have found something to get around that with more planning, but then again, maybe we couldn’t. The other issue we had technically is that we weren’t able to shoot at higher frame rates in order to slow down both of the pouring shots. We shot the whole project at 25p and were able to slow the footage down to about 80-90% speed without frame rates becoming noticeable, however being able to take it further by shooting at 50p, we would have had more striking effects.
