The combination of Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma in Sultan is proving even more potent that most pundits had predicted as the romantic drama smashed multiple records in India and internationally over the weekend.
Among the milestones, the 70 crore ($13 million) Yash Raj Films production written and directed by Ali Abbas Zafar set new benchmarks for 3-day and 5-day opening weekends in India and Pakistan. Sultan also created history by becoming the first Hindi film to cross 200 crore ($30 million) in worldwide business in the first weekend.
Moreover, Khan is now the only Bollywood superstar with 10 films that have each netted more than 100 crore ($15 million) in India, ahead of Shah Rukh Khan’s six, five each for Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar, and four for Aamir Khan.
Launched on July 6 on 4,350 screens in India and 1,100 screens in the rest of the world, the film co-starring Randeep Hooda and Amit Sadh raked in 142.62 crore ($21.4 million) in its first four days in India. The 105.50 crore ($15.8 million) 3-day tally was an all-time industry record, beating Khan’s 2015 Eid release Bajrangi Bhaijaan’s 101.42 crore ($15.2 million). Sultan has collected an estimated $3.2 million in five days on 283 screens in the U.S. and $A792,000 ($600,000) on 28 in Australia. Released in Pakistan by Geo Films, the title took approximately 150P crore ($1.4 million) in five days, obliterating the opening weekend record set by Pakistani movie Jawani Phir Nahi Ani last year.
In India the projected 5-day total is 182 crore ($27.3 million). “Most probably it will break the record of the highest-grossing film at the end of its run,” Rajender Singh Jyala, VP, programming and distribution at the Inox Leisure circuit, tells FORBES. The blockbuster has already eclipsed the lifetime total of Khan’s Dabangg 2, which earned 158.5 crore ($23.8 million) in 2012, and this week will overtake Ek Tha Tiger’s 198 crore ($29.7 million) in 2012, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’s 207.40 crore ($30.2 million) and Kick’s 233 crore ($35 million) in 2014.
If it maintains momentum, fed by glowing reviews and word of mouth, it has a shot at overtaking director Kabir Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which finished up earning 320.34 crore ($48.15 million).It may even challenge the all-time record earner in India, director Rajkumar Hirani’s PK, which stars Aamir Khan, Sushant Singh Rajput, Anushka Sharma and Sanjay Dutt, and minted 339.5 crore ($51 million) in 2014.
The drama already ranks as the No. 1 Hindi title released this year, overtaking director Raja Krishna Menon’s Airlift, the true-life story of India’s biggest evacuation mission, which stars Akshay Kumar and Nimrat Kaur, and rang up 127.80 crore ($19.2 million).
In the underdog-to-champion saga Salman Khan plays Sultan Ali Khan, a 40-year-old former wrestler from Haryana. He became a wrestler to woo Aarfa (Sharma), Haryana’s most famous female wrestler. They married and he became world champion, but a tragedy drove his wife away and he decided to give up the sport. Hooda plays Sultan’s aggressive coach and Sadh is a young, struggling Mixed Martial Arts entrepreneur who convinces Sultan that he can redeem himself by returning to the world of wrestling.
