chapter fifteen: theia

Morgan smoothed her palms over the front of her sweater, the lilac woven thread peeking out through the unzipped folds of her coat as she walked a straight line from Liz's truck to Jacob's front door. Her mind raced with thoughts of her appearance. Or, more specifically, what others' opinions might be on it. Had she done too much? It was a nice sweater and jeans. Was she under-dressed? Jacob had said it was casual, but she'd never met these people before.

How was she to know their definition of casual? What if they expected more from her, given the rumors about her family's wealth? It itched like a mosquito bite at the base of her skull, just below the skin, and it caused her fingers to fidget with the hems of her sleeves with anxiety. In the driveway, a particular shade of orange caught her eye. Her feet came to a stop, boots shuffling still in the leaves, as her eyes focused on the old truck parked next to Billy's. Bella. What was she doing here? No one had told her there'd be more guests—especially not her.

They hadn't spoken since Bella walked away from the lockers in a huff. She'd seen her in the halls and in the cafeteria, but it felt like they didn't quite know each other anymore. As if we knew each other at all, Morgan sighed heavily beneath the weight of the thought. It was true. What did they know about each other? How much time had they spent together? Was there really any friendship lost? It soured her stomach.

chapter sixteen: worm moon

Morgan's feet swung slowly, aimlessly as they hung above the pavement of the parking lot. Her hand carried a pencil over a page and she appeared to anyone else as a small child doodling to pass the time. But she was rather focused on the sketch coming to life line by line, filling in the framework she'd done the day before with shading and harsher edges, and it didn't feel childish at all. "Slow down, munchkin," Emmett's voice curved the pencil to the left, causing Morgan to lurch in an over-correction. "We're gonna need to get you another sketchbook by the end of the week."

Her eyes shifted up to see the giant's face as he towered over her, leaning against the back of the jeep to her right. "Especially if you keep lacking situational awareness," she retorted, only somewhat in jest.

The others were in various stages of nearing them, all approaching the cars from the stairs at the end of the parking lot. It felt like just a normal day. There was no sparkle or shine, no innate happiness from today's date. However, there was excitement simmering beneath her skin that left her buzzing with anticipation. Today was her birthday. She'd gotten her driver's license before school. But neither of those things could compete with the knowledge that she would see him.

chapter thirteen: satellite

Morgan couldn't sleep. At least, not deeply enough to mean anything. With her eyes screwed shut, she tossed and turned in an attempt to reach a level of comfort just out of reach. But no amount of comfort could silence the thoughts racing through her mind. They kept her awake for hours, sometimes quieting just enough to allow her to slip away a little deeper into sleep, only to pull her right back out with a thought shouted into the void in her own voice.

She turned her back to the wall of glass windows to block out the gentle moonlight. It would be a good idea to simply get up and close the curtains—but what if she lost even more leverage? Exhaustion and comfort were all she had to bargain with and she was lacking in both departments. She might lose them both if she were to get out of bed now. So, instead, she forced her eyes to stay closed as she faced the bathroom. Bugs was sound asleep in the crate across the room and Nixie was downstairs in the living room.

There was nothing she could blame for this sleeplessness but her poor decisions. It terrified her to know that there were others out there that knew what she was without her having to speak a word to them. The revelation felt skin-baring, an intrusion into her most private places that made her skin crawl. Just the idea of it was enough to lift the hairs at the nape of her neck—but the reality was something so stomach-twisting. Her torso felt so tight that her lungs couldn't quite lift the muscle and tissue, and it left a dizzying feeling.

chapter fourteen: third quarter

She tugged her glasses off her nose with a shallow sigh. There was no point in keeping them on her face—spray covered the lenses in a fine mist, a layer of water just thick enough to blur everything important anyway. "And you know for a fact that no one comes around here this time of day?" her eyes slid to the left to find his face, despite the sheet of blurred colors it was now.

"Yeah. It's off-season for tourists and the weather forecast for today was terrible. Everyone's in school right now, anyways," Jacob shrugged as he bobbed his head in a nod. Then, a bit quickly, he added, "If you wanna try for another day, that's totally cool. We don't have to do this."

Exhaling through her nostrils, Morgan glanced down at the surface of the water. Black and brown under the light from the clouds, pushed outward toward the sea through the river, away from the falls overhead. Thus far, every excursion into salt water had earned her another dream-like vision. But she'd agreed to do this. She wanted to do this. She wanted, more than anything, to be comfortable as herself around someone who wasn't a family member. And, after all, wasn't Jacob the ideal someone?

So, Morgan shook her head. "No, I wanna do it. Just can't be too careful."
