"Every Saturday, the Gotham Gazette includes a small life-styles piece called "Gotham Is." In the column, random Gothamites are asked to complete the sentence "Gotham is…" using three words or less. The Gazette has been running the "Gotham Is" column for years, ever since I was a boy.
Here are some of the words used to describe Gotham the past few weeks:
“Damned.”
"Cursed."
"Bedlam."
"Murderous…"
"Gotham is villainous."
Gotham is “a losing game.”
Gotham is “hopeless.”
Once in awhile someone names one of the city’s villains as their answer to the “Gotham Is” question. Usually, it’s some kid, a teenager going for shock value. But now and then someone actually tries to make the argument that the city is best reflected in its villains. For example, “Gotham is Two-Face,” meaning Gotham is a city at odds with itself. Or “Gotham is Killer Croc.” Meaning the city is little more than a cannibalistic monster. I’ve seen a few “Mr. Freezes.” Two “Black Masks.” Lately I’ve seen a couple new names appear, too.
But for me, Gotham’s criminals…
…whether old…
…or new…
…will never define this city. Because in the end, they’re simple and cowardly, ruled by predictable desires.
Granted, now and then, one of them will do something that catches even me off-guard…
…something particularly depraved…
…or twisted…
Of course, one of the most common answers to the “Gotham Is” question is “Batman.”
"Gotham is ‘Batman.’"
"Gotham is ‘Batman’s city.’"
"Gotham is ‘the Bat…’"
All answers I’m partial to, myself.
Still, I like to think a vote for Batman is a broader affirmation—a vote for all of Gotham’s heroes.
A vote for the G.C.P.D. Honest, tireless men like Commissioner Jim Gordon.
…My view is, when it comes to Gotham, you don’t know it. It knows you. And the moment you think otherwise, the moment you get too comfortable… …That’s when it stabs you right in the back.
Because above everything, Gotham is… a mystery.”
—Bruce Wayne, Batman #1 (2011)

GOTHAM CITY SKYLINE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY ONE SHOT CHALLENGE “GOTHAM IS”
Hi everyone! It’s time again for a one shot challenge. Ready? Here we go!
This challenge’s theme: “Gotham Is.”
First off, have your character complete the sentence “Gotham is…” using three words or less. Title your oner with this!
Next, write a oner about exactly why Gotham means what you chose. Be detailed, and use your creative side!
Still a little confused? Fair enough. For Roman Sionis, Gotham is a mask. To Bane, Gotham is a reckoning. Sarah Essen’s Gotham is justice.
Tag your one shot with GCS Oner: Gotham Is. Make sure it’s exactly that tag, colons and all, so everyone can track it and read your fabulous work.
You don’t have to write about the same thing as everyone else - don’t be afraid to toy around with the one shot and make it a little different. These are meant to challenge you, but they’re also meant to be part of a creative expansion of your character.
Keep in mind that these are optional but recommended. It helps you get to know your character better.
If you have any questions, message Morgan, Kerrie, or the main blog about it. We look forward to reading these!

MAY 26 ONE SHOT CHALLENGE
DEADLY SINS
Hi everyone! It's time again for a one shot challenge. Ready? Here we go!
This challenge's theme is Deadly Sins. Simple enough; pick one of the seven deadly sins--Anger (wrath), Greed, Sloth (laziness), Pride, Lust, Envy, and Gluttony.
All you need to do is choose one of the above sins, one that is integral to your character. Then, write about it and how that trait shapes their lives and decisions.
Still a little confused? Fair enough. For example, Jason Todd is going to have Anger for his Sin. Bane would have had Pride, and Roy Harper will have Gluttony, due to his addiction problems.
Tag your one shot with GCS Oner: Deadly Sins.
ONE SHOT CHALLENGE | MARCH 2013
THEME: THE OCCUPATION
Hello to Gothamites new and old! Due to the influx of new people (8!!), we're going to be starting up an old staple-one shot challenges! The idea of these is to take a theme, and apply it to your character in the form of a one shot. Simple, right?
So, the theme for our one shot challenge this month is pretty central to the history of Gotham City Skyline. We want you to write about a time and a place-specifically, Bane's Occupation of Gotham. We want you to write a one shot about one, or more, incidents your character suffered or survived through during Bane's takeover of Gotham.
Tag your one shot with GCS Oner: The Occupation. Make sure it's exactly that tag, colons and all, so everyone can track it and read your fabulous work.
You don't have to write about the same thing as everyone else - don't be afraid to toy around with the one shot and make it a little different. These are meant to challenge you, but they're also meant to be part of a creative expansion of your character.
These will be posted monthly, and are not mandatory, just highly recommended. They're a great window into your character, so please take the time to participate. There is no length or time requirement, but keep in mind that new challenges will be posted each month.
Hello, Gotham! We'd like to take this opportunity to welcome our third and newest admin, Riah! She currently plays Allison Brett.
Don't be a stranger, get to know her, if you don't already!
Attention followers! We are going to be updating old characters and posting new ones over the next several weeks, so keep an eye out for anyone you'd like to audition for! As a reminder, our inbox is always open, and we'd love to get a fresh bundle of new, talented players.
Best of luck in the upcoming auditions, and may the odds be ever in your fav-wait, wrong fandom.
Deshi Basara!
Merry Christmas, Gothamites!
