Agreed there. 

With Lotor it works, because Dreamworks never made a villain like him before, so you don’t see it coming as much. There were clues dropped about his true nature, so the twist makes sense. 

However, the same can’t be said for these new Disney movies, because, like you said, everyone can see it coming a mile away. If anything, a Disney movie having a straight up villain would be a breath of fresh air, because I never seen one of those in ages outside of maybe The Incredibles 2, but I still found that villain underwhelming.

I think it was said in an interview that it happened because the writers wanted to come up with a scientific explanation for how they found the blue lion but were told that it was too complicated so they went with ‘Keith is magic iunno’ instead to replace some of it and if that’s true it’s pretty much the only reason Keith has powers. I mean granted you’re right, it’s gone far far beyond that point, I just thought it was funny- but also it might mean there is no official explanation. I hope there is, a lot, but there really might not be.

That may be how it started, but this is a device they have now used several times, across pretty much every season. If they weren’t going to explain it, they really, really should have left all reference to it back in S1E1 (along with ‘who the hell created the wormhole that Blue used to take them to Arus’).

the show did make a token attempt at having the galra be more than just evil: the bom exist, and civilians exist though we don't see much of them. it's just that they're not super consistent with that. plus looking at season 5 it doesn't really feel like voltron is allied with the bom anymore, between the lack of decent communication and their attitude towards galra going right back to the way it was before they met them- if it ever changed at all.

They do talk with Kolivan at least once but yeah. Communication seems to be lacking now that they’re not doing missions together with the BOM anymore. It doesn’t seem like the paladins were even aware that Keith & friends were going to be doing something at the Kral Zera; otherwise they might have mentioned it during their little debate. Like “no, it’s too dangerous, and also Keith is going to be blowing the shit out of it so maybe don’t”. Maybe it’s easy for them to backslide towards dehumanizing the Galra without them around... Or maybe it’s just lazy writing.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

it's been stated more than a few times that the creators / writers really did want shiro to die and for keith to be black paladin, so it's never been that they're not beholden to past incarnations- they aren't permitted to be.

It’s been stated more than a few times that the creators / writers really did want Shiro to die and for Keith to be Black Paladin in the early drafts of the show. 

Yes, the executives made the decision not to kill off Shiro and sent that draft down the chute. And yea, that limited what the creators could do. But that’s normal for any show. And is a “what could have been” scenario for this show. 

And yes, it’s entirely within the realm of possibilities that Keith is going to be permanent Black Paladin, but my point was that I’m not convinced that’s the only option for his arc. Just one of many that would be truly interesting. The fact that they didn’t start Keith out as Black Paladin is proof enough for me that they aren’t trying to match the original story. 

Also, it’s not logical to point to those statements about wanting to kill Shiro off as proof for what is to come... Iv’e seen people point to it as a reason to invalidate Shiro as a character, as a reason to invalidate Keith’s arc as a Blade, as a reason to validate Keith becoming permanent Black Paladin and.. these statements are about a draft version of the plot that was scrapped and/or re-worked early on. They have also said the story evolved and has taken turns they didn’t originally plan for, that they let some things grow organically. 

So maybe what is to come is going to surprise us all.. even the creators.

Yeah a lot of ballets just aren’t adapted into movies that often because their plots hinge on ballet as a storytelling medium and need to be changed to make the transition to film worthwhile.

Pretty much. Same can be said with other adaptions as well. Changes will always have to be made to make a story work in another medium.

We already knew the fandom wouldn’t die, so this is good news at least. I hope if it’s a movie that the costumes look ok. it would be very easy to screw up.

By the sounds of it, it might be as anime style OVA movies and not a live action one, since this is talking about the VLD series itself. But who knows at this point.
