I know nothing about star trek but I am at the absolute fucking edge of my seat to hear your takes on it regardless

first of all, i love that you are perpetually willing to listen to me ramble about whatever tv show i’m currently obsessed with, even if you haven’t seen it; thank you for your service.

anyway, like i said i’ve only watched s1 + a bit of s2 of tos at this point so i don’t have anything insightful to say about it yet, but here are some drive-by thoughts:

it’s fun to see just how many sci-fi tropes i’ve encountered in other places came from star trek, from sex pollen to aliens going into heat to parallel universes where everyone’s evil (as marked by the presence of a goatee, even!)

i’m bizarrely charmed by how obviously and unapologetically cheap all the futuristic technology looks.  the computer files are just colored blocks, for god’s sake!

relatedly, all of the outfits are insane, and i can’t decide if i love it or hate it

i do really want a starfleet badge lapel pin, though

i know in a lot of ways the show was pretty progressive at the time but man does the gender politics leave a lot to be desired

i’m already 100% invested in kirk/spock and i’m already excited by the prospect of shipping the most popular thing in fandom.  there’ll be so much fic to read!

good lord I’m so sorry you have to deal with these knee-jerk responses. also to liberals hate reading this, please understand that institutions create policy only in response to demonstrations that they (not we the people, but they the institutional leadership) demonstrably have something big to lose by not listening. those logging reforms would never, ever have been passed if direct action hadn’t created an immediate financial reason for logging companies to concede to new regulations.

lolno it’s not okay for someone to categorically decide they don’t want to date black people and it’s also not okay for someone to categorically decide they don’t want to date trans women specifically, because both of those rely on fucked up assumptions about what it is to date those people and what their bodies and personalities are like.

So uh. You’re going to force people to date? That’s the road we’re going down? That seems reasonable to you? We’re going to cure transphobia by making transphobes date and have sex with trans people? Well, I have absolutely no idea how that could go wrong!
