chlorine
it sticks in your hair. it's four in the morning and you are sticky and sweaty and helping set the pool up. the deck is cold. you are cold. but it is warm. the pool is even colder. nothing makes sense, except for your coach. he also never makes sense. it's still dark. you can barely see. the floodlights are on and you squint in the bright lights reflected from the pool.
the pool is cold. it soaks into your skin and you are here. present, in the moment even as you feel yourself flying away when you dive into the water. it is four-thirty in the morning and you are in a different city surrounded by the same people that love and hate you.
the pool is warm. your body is cold. you are used to the shivers that wrack your body even as you warm up.
you kick off the wall.
you kick off the wall.
you kick off the wall.
it is here, it is now, and it is endless.
the pool is all that matters. you let callouses form on your feet, let yourself ache when you slam into a teammate or the lane line, and you remind yourself that you are here.
you always smell of chlorine, even on vacation.
the pool is a part of you now, and it doesn't let you go.
Story Practice (10/9/22)— DOG Part IV
She’s much shorter than him and scrawny too. Her hair is white, whatever’s left of it, and her voice is mixed between shrewd and pleasant.
He still can’t help but giggle at her. There’s something about her that’s so.. ridiculous.
But.. she’s kinda like him. Fair skinned too. It’s not that common in these parts.
“I don’t see you in school- how do you learn? Do you learn?” She’s sounding less like a squeaky mom and more like a real person.
He takes too long to respond. He’s too busy analyzing to pay attention.
“Hello?” She snaps a few times in his face. He starts to chuckle again because she had to be on her tipy-toes to do so.
“Yes.. I do I, uh..” he takes another drawn out moment to speak. “.. it’s rude to show up there.”
She blinks- “Why?”
“Because… “ he drifts off. He looks back at her. Realizing she might not see it in the dark.
“Oh.. ok. I get it..?” She doesn’t.
She starts to step out into the light, waving him on. “Okay but come on! Didn’t you listen to me? Get out!”
He steps forward but hesitates when he steps into the light. He closes his eyes as the day’s sun is painful.
The small girl raises her hood over her head. She looks back to him and sees what he’s so afraid of. “Ooooh..” she bends over and looks up at him. “.. did it hurt?”
“-no?” He shades his eyes and scowls down at her.
“Do you.. feel anything?” She said.
Jeremy shakes his head. That plastic thing is on the right side of his face, around his side and cheek, it goes up a curve onto the side of his head, cutting into his hair a bit.
In this lighting, she can see a shade of red underneath. She bends back, eyes wide.
He looks away. He swallows. Knowing.
The small girl tries to grab onto his arm, the one shading his eyes. “Hey! Move it- I wanna see the rest! “
He palms the side of his head- “What? No! That’s the worst part!” She has just enough strength to grab his arm, lift up her legs, and dangle there.
The weight of it drags his arm nearly to the ground, almost taking him with it.
He panics.
He’s brought too close to her face to where he could pick up her smell. It was a weird, oily smell.
She’s ignoring him. Looking past his eyes and onto the part of his head that’s missing. The one with cycle on it. She touches it and coos. “Woah… it’s so cool.. and smooth.” Moving her hand back and forth over the area, rubbing his hair with it.
For whatever reason, he can’t move. He’s frozen solid and he lets her keep petting that part of his head. He couldn’t look at her. Barely breathing. His heart is pounding out of his chest.
“OK.”
He lifts up, nerves on fire. She’s on her back but sits up. “Sorry- it’s just- it’s so cool!”
“-S’not.” He covers that part of face.
She raises a hand to him, with a grin. “Shiro.”
He looks down at her, crinkling his brows. “Shiro.. like those.. clones?”
She grins more softly now. Her arm relaxes.
“Yeah. Like those clones.”

It’s been several days since that first meeting. His life didn’t change much at first either. She didn’t linger around during school hours w
