Morocco spans multiple climate zones, from the Atlantic coast to the Sahara Desert and the High Atlas Mountains. The best time to visit depends on where you want to go and what you want to experience.
Spring (March to May) is widely considered the best overall time to visit Morocco. Temperatures across the country are pleasant, wildflowers bloom in the Atlas Mountains, and the Sahara is comfortable before the summer heat builds.
Autumn (September to November) is the second ideal season, with warm but not extreme temperatures in the cities, comfortable Sahara nights, and beautiful light for photography.
Marrakech and the inland imperial cities (Fes, Meknes, Rabat) are best in spring and autumn. Summers can be extremely hot (40 degrees Celsius or more in July and August), and while the cities are still very much open and vibrant, the heat can be overwhelming for sightseeing.
The Sahara Desert is best visited from October through April. Summer temperatures in the Sahara can reach extreme levels. The winter months (December to February) bring cold nights and very comfortable days in the desert.
Chefchaouen and the Rif Mountains are lovely in spring, summer, and early autumn. Being at higher altitude, they provide a cooler escape from summer coastal heat, and in winter the mountains can receive snow.
The Atlas Mountains offer beautiful trekking in spring and early summer. Winter brings heavy snow to the High Atlas, enabling skiing at Oukaimeden but closing some mountain passes.
The Atlantic coast (Essaouira, Agadir, Casablanca) has a mild climate year-round, moderated by Atlantic breezes. Essaouira is particularly pleasant in summer when it catches the cooling trade winds.
