It is the last week of the #PeakOfOurCollections challenge, and we want to stir those vacation vibes with a snapshot of the Morris family hanging out together in style on [more than a] Consolation Lake showing a gorgeous view of snow-capped mountains.

Marriott C. Morris avidly documented his family throughout his lifetime and often captured scenes from the turn of the 20th century that we can relate to today. A beautiful day by the sea picking wildflowers is no exception, and with Spring around the corner we are impatient to be right there with them.

Our followers know how much we love the Marriott C. Morris photograph collection. For the most part this collection spans years of Marriott’s adult life as an amateur photographer, documenting family life in the late 19th century. This video is a window into Marriott’s and his sister Bessie’s childhood life through their collection of monograms. Marriott was 10 years old when he started this album.

We’re closing out this month’s #BoatsintheLibrary challenge with this striking image from our Morris Collection, captured by Marriott C. Morris in August, 1883.

Marriott C. Morris took many photographs at his family’s summer home in Sea Girt, New Jersey over the course of his life. While a majority of the negatives in the Library Company’s collection show various views of their estate, Avocado, a small series of negatives shows large crowds and carriages as far as the eye can see on the beach. But what are all of these people doing here? And why does this event seem to only last for one day each year?

Among his many interests, Marriott C. Morris was a fan of bicycling. Whether playing with his children or taking extended trips, Morris had joined in on a craze that swept America and Europe in the late Victorian period. Interested in the many images of bicycles and bicycling parties within the Marriott C. Morris Collection, Curatorial and Reading Room Assistant Emma Ricciardi wrote a quick history of the bicycle.
