Morris Hirshfield!... at MoMA, NYC. Here • Tiger • from 1940. Morris Hirshfield was born in Poland in 1872. At the age of 18 he emigrated to the US and settled in NYC. Finding work making women's coats eventually led him to establish his own coat manufacturing business with his brother. Later they went into making slippers and became the most successful business of this kind in NYC but he had to retire early due to health problems. In 1937, at the age of 65, he started to paint. Only six years later, in 1943, Hirshfield was the first self-taught artist to have a retrospective at MoMA. The negative press received by the show became one of the factors precipating Alfred Barr's demotion as director of MoMA. #morrishirshfield #hirshfield #art #modernart #painting #naïveart #postimpressionism #outsiderart #tiger #cats #catsofinstagram #pattern #jungle #primitive #figure #figuration #figurative #theamazingpoppingeyes #moma #museumofmodernart #nyc https://www.instagram.com/p/B-IWi4KgARA/?igshid=qdhtahzmi4at

Four from “Outliers and American Vanguard Art” at #nationalgalleryofart #washingtondc #Jimnutt #marsdenhartley #morrishirshfield from the web page: “focuses on three periods over the last century when the intersection of self-taught artists with the mainstream has been at its most fertile. It is the first major exhibition to explore how those key moments, which coincided with periods of American social, political, and cultural upheaval, challenged or erased traditional hierarchies and probed prevailing assumptions about creativity, artistic practice, and the role of the artist in contemporary culture. Bringing together some 250 works in a range of media, the exhibition includes more than 80 schooled and unschooled artists and argues for a more diverse and inclusive representation in cultural institutions and cultural history.” #painting #gallery #arthistory
