The Grand Mosque of Paris
Located in the French capital, it is one of the most popular architectural landmarks found in France and in Europe. The mosque also is a record-holder, being the largest mosque in Europe outside of Spain and the Balkans. It was built to honor the Muslim French soldiers who fought in WW1. This one-hectare complex consists of a lot of striking features especially the 33 meter high minaret which was inspired by the Zitouna mosque in Tunisia while the overall design of the mosque was inspired from the El-Qaraouiyyîn Mosque in Fez which is one of the largest in Morocco and among the oldest in the world. The manufacture of all its decorative elements, especially the zellij, or tile work, was done by expert craftsmen from North Africa who used traditional materials. The main entrance way is embellished with stylized floral motifs while the gardens are filled with pools, fountains, and flowers.
I simply adore the design of this elegant structure and its so amazing how the form follows function in such a smooth beautiful way. The gardens, pools, fountains, trees and flowers..they all create a calm serene relaxing environment, perfect for those using it. Also the craftsmanship and the precise detailing of the decorative elements is very beautifully done.
