One of my favourite choral pieces. While I subscribe to no religion, my father was a Christian minister, and while participating in an a capella choir as a youth, we did sing traditional Christian music, particularly around Christmas.  This time of year I inevitably hear this type of music and am reminded of how much I enjoy this style of unaccompanied choral work.

This version of a traditional chant was composed my Morten Lauridsen in 1994. It blows other composer's versions away for stately evocativeness, IMHO.

The text refers to the amazing mystery of the messiah being born in a stable among animals.  Some have said that this shows the juxtaposition of the holiest and highest allowing itself to become the lowest.  Others have posited that the animals recognized the baby as God.  Being a lifelong animal lover, I see nothing lowly about being born among them.  After all, an animal will never judge you for how rich or poor you are, where you're from, the colour of your skin, or your religion.  

It is that sort of love without judgement that is a magnum mysterium I can get behind.  Whatever holidays you celebrate, or if you observe none, I wish you a happy turn of the year.
