Mosaic hops, clean water, & new Shiner Golden Ale

The latest from Spoetzl Brewery – Shiner Golden Ale.

This is another great example of what the brewery does best. Easy drinking, approachable beers. Well water from underneath the brewery and Mosaic hops highlight Shiner Golden Ale. The beer is crisp, clean and refreshing.

That description may sound a bit derived, but let’s put it in the context of Spoetzl. Premium, Homespun Cream Ale, Black Lager – all lighter styles the brewery does quite well. Golden Ale in all it’s Mosaic goodness is a great right along side them all. Perfect for rocking chair on a porch on a hot day.

Look for Shiner Golden Ale year-round starting this month in 12 ounce bottles, and draft.

Graceful Hopping

Mosaic hops only hit the market till 2012 but they have been everywhere in the last three years. I've tasted them in IPAs and double IPAs, even a Belgian IPA. But I think the best use of these little nuggets has been Anchorage Brewing's Mosaic Saison. 

Also started in 2012, Anchorage, the small Alaskan farmhouse brewery, is known for experimenting with wood aging, spontaneous fermentation, and Brettanomyces yeast. Mosaic Saison for example was fermented in oak with Brett adding extra levels of musty flavor. The hops really sing in this beer. From the pineapple notes on the nose to the cantaloupe on the tongue. Brett dries the palate with old straw. As the beer warms, the hop and yeast flavors coalesce into a nice lemony tartness. Mosaic Saison is surprisingly clean for a beer inoculated with wild yeast.

Metamodern Session IPA by Oasis, Texas Brewing Co.

Another IPA that uses Mosaic hops. I hate them. The flavor has more than a hint of mildew to it. As far as session IPAs go though, Metamodern by Austin’s Oasis, Texas Brewing Co. is one of the hoppiest and closest to a full-strength IPA (in flavor at least) that I’ve had thus far. Some of the Mosaic flavor I don’t like is tempered by citrus though so it’s not all bad. I probably would not drink this again. I gotta say, with the Metamodern name the brewery could totally do a some kind of tie-in with country singer Sturgill Simpson. Just saying.

Last of the Freshies

This is probably the last beer of the 2014 fresh hop season. It was a good year for fresh hops. We had fruity beers, pungent beers, and grassy beers. There were a few with amazing complexity, and there were a few that fell flat, but all in all, the hops shined.

Chasin' Freshies from Deschutes features fresh Mosaic hops. Only commercially available since 2012, Mosaic hops are renowned for their complex tropical fruit and blueberry flavors. I can't say I found any blueberry in my glass of Freshies, but the complexity was definitely on display.

The nose stinks -- in a good way. Think mango meets garlic breath. On the tongue, Chasin' Freshies is earthier. Cedar trees, fresh grass, and a strong bitter aftertaste. The body is light and snappy. Freshies eschews malt flavor in favor of pure hop experience. Sarah loved it. She can't get enough of those fancy new hops.

New Year New Hops

I had a few more people tell me over the holidays that they hate hoppy beers. They are either lying or they don't know how many varieties of hoppy there are out there. Hoppy beers can range form the fruity and delicious, to the punishingly bitter, to earthy, to piney, to grassy -- anything. They just haven't tried enough hoppy varieties.

Mosaic is one of those newfangled, tropical hops. The hop is so new there isn't a lot to go around. Mosaics are popping up in a few beers here and there, mostly on draft. Somehow Crux Fermentation Project found a enough to bottle a brew. 

Half Hitch Imperial Mosaic India Pale Ale is nothing like you might expect. It's super fruity, but not like a grapefruit. More like a blueberry. It's subtle and tropical, but not like a mango. It's smooth and the bitterness is just enough to balance the sweetness. 

If you hate hoppy beer, try some more variety in the new year. You might find you've been missing out.
