I’ve seen a lot of “self-proclaimed Iran experts” refer to Mossadegh as some “democratically” elected prime minister or rant about how some CIA “coup” overthrew him for their “original sin of the west” bullshit and while America did have a role in islamic republic’s rise to power during the Carter’s era, this one has nothing to do with it.

Most Americans trace the origins of the US-Iran conflict back to the 1979 seizure of the US Embassy in Tehran by Islamist revolutionaries overthrowing an erstwhile valuable regional ally. What most people in the United States don’t know is that the actions of those young Iranians nearly 40 years ago were in fact an explosive reaction to more than half a century of US and Western meddling in their country’s affairs, a mostly one-way relationship in which Iran’s vast oil resources were terribly exploited by foreign corporations while the Iranian people were brutally oppressed by a US-backed dictator.

When the government of Muhammad Mossadegh nationalised the assets of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company in 1951, Iran had taken over the production of oil but was unable to sell it. The British blockaded exports from the refinery at Abadan, persuading tanker fleets and major oil companies to refuse to handle the oil. Anglo-Iranian made up the lost supplies by doubling production in the neighbouring oilfields of Kuwait, which became the largest producer in the Middle East. Since oil formed a large part of Iran’s export revenues, the blockade threw the country into economic crisis, leaving the government an easy target for the Anglo-American-organised military coup of August 1953. The coup removed Mossadegh’s parliamentary-based government, restored and enhanced the oligarchic rule of the shah, and exposed the left to violent repression.
