I have two moss boxes. One on the right is thriving. One on the left is struggling. I do not know all of the species yet because I will admit im lazy. I just know I have different species of moss in both boxes. Nothing too unique, just some mosses i found on campus. Recently been feeding them beer.

Can I just show my appreciation for one of my favorite mosses, Menzies' tree moss (Leucolepis acanthoneura)? I would like to be a little beetle trundling along under the awnings of green phyllids.
Last night's big victory was getting all but one of these mosses identified down to species level with a pretty good level of confidence, considering I am not a professional botanist. The only one that I got stuck at genus level was a Racomitrium I found growing on a chunk of basalt, and to be fair that genus can be difficult to identify down to species level, especially if you're like me and forgot to bring a microscope.
Still, this rounds out my native plant list for my residency project pretty well. There are a few plants I want to follow up on early summer because they're the sorts that are best identified by their flowers, but I can make arrangements to come back here for a day to check on them.
My residency ends Friday morning, so tomorrow I have to spend a good bit of the day packing my stuff and cleaning up the house for the next resident. And, to be honest, I am ready to go home, as lovely a time as I have had here. But I will continue to bask in the beauty and quiet of this place until it's time for me to go, and carry many good memories with me into my next adventure.
A little colored pencil study of Douglas's neckera moss (Neckera douglasii) I'm working on. It needs some darker values and a few more negative spaces filled in, but I like it so far.
