“Stop!” Manuela screamed from the balcony, Serafin tip toeing carefully to her, he wore a grin like a Cheshire cat. “I don’t want you here! Don’t come any closer!” she hissed, a whispering demand he didn’t follow. Before long he was standing in front of her, parading about in her room as if he owned the house. “Didn’t I tell you to leave?!” Manuela was at her wits end, Serafin whirled around lavishly bowing to her. “Manuela, dear pure soul, admit one thing before I do go...You love me!”
“Don’t you dare carry on like this you...You gypsy actor! I do not love you! I know it may be hard for you to believe but trust me, I could not and would not ever love someone as foul as you!” Serafin took a step back, “Well, I’m foul? What do you make of your prince charming out there? I think he’s more of a frog, I doubt he’ll regain his dashing good looks when you kiss him though. Pity, seems you may be stuck with a toad for a husband..And to think, someone with a voice like yours, someone who can sing-” Manuela swung around at that statement. “Listen to me, I did not sing, I was not there, you do not know me. Now leave, please! He’s a pious man! He’s a good man! You’re ruining everything for me!” She pleaded and began to cry, sitting down on the ornamented chase in her room. “I loathe everything I did that night! Don’t you see? It’s terrible! I can’t face myself in the morning for it! Oh! If my family were to know! Don’t you know how ill they’d think of me?!” She was in full blown hysterics by now. Serafin picked up her hat from when they had first met at the sea, it was still slightly damaged from the water it landed in. “What about the kiss?” he asked, looking off into the distance. “Wh-What did you say?” she managed to whisper it. “What...About...The kiss?” Serafin turned toward her, still holding the hat. “Oh...Oh no. No, we mustn’t speak of that, please! Not that!” Manuela made to leave, he blocked the door easily.
“Manuela! Dear, are you ready?” Aunt Inez called from down the hall.
“Yes-I mean no, Aunt Inez! No!” Manuela locked her door and turn around tersely. “You! You leave this instant! You’re nothing but a-” Serafin stopped her with his finger to her lips. “It took your breath away didn’t it? Come now, I know it did...” He trailed off, letting his hand slip down to her waist. “...Yes. Yes, it took my breath away...”
Serafin leaned in closer, watching her eyes as they darted from him to the window. She was still nervous, “Manuela...” He kissed her deeply and she responded not holding back at all. Her hand trailed up his arm and to his hair, her other hand to his back gripping his shirt. When they pulled apart her chest was still heaving. “You don’t want to marry him.” Serafin made for the window he had entered from. “Stop! No, I don’t want to marry him...” She sat down her face in her hands almost about to cry. “Who do you want to be with Manuela?” he sat down beside her, stroking her face. “I want to be with you, as crazy as it seems and as sudden as it all is, I just...Serafin, I want to wake up and be with a man who wants to see the world, not hide from it.” He held her in his arms and there was a deep silence. The wheels of their minds both turning, he leaned forward. “Maybe I can be with you, before you’re married to him. Just once.” He leaned in and kissed her laying her down on her back on the chase.
