The Charleston church shooting (also known as the Charleston church massacre) was a mass shooting on June 17, 2015, in Charleston, South Carolina, in which nine African Americans were killed during a Bible study at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Among those killed was the senior pastor, state senator Clementa C. Pinckney; three victims survived. This church is one of the oldest black churches in the United States, and it has long been a center for organizing related to civil rights. Picked up this picture book at Costco and have wept while reading it. Based on the song of the events after the 2015 Mother Emanuel Church shooting when President Barack Obama gave a eulogy for the church's pastor. As an educator, gun violence is now an inevitable reality for my students and myself. MSNBC's Joy Ann Reid talked U.S. presidency, CofC presidency at Thursday night panel

MSNBC journalist Joy Ann Reid moderates a discussion between College of Charleston professors on the first year of the Trump presidency at the Sottile Theater on Feb. 1.

“Five multi-disciplinary CofC academics weighed in on how the first 365 days of President Trump have affected their students, their classes, and their disciplines.“

This article touched on the college’s storied history of racism; as well as its’ history as the 13th oldest public institution in the state.

The article highlighted the danger of the Trump shadow Presidency, and the challenge the media faces in covering it; the President is such an intoxicating figure but the work is being done by the parties and on the hill.

The article leaves out a subtle nuance that was discussed but perhaps is glossed over here in the linked article for a number of reasons. I suspect that this CP article glosses over the subject of an expectation for black people to immediately forgive their aggressors.  

Panelist Dr. Anthony Green, I believe contribute to the discussion, made a comment about how the families of the Emanuel massacerand Walter Scott murder were expected to almost immediately forgive the aggressor.

Where is the compassion for these people, the victims who, in some cases, have lost everything - perhaps that one person that made them whole.

He was Black man who bought his freedom through a lottery but was unable to buy freedom for his family. While living in Charleston, SC he had took part in organizing allegedly 9000 enslaved Afrikans to revolt against their oppressors. However the revolt never took place because an enslaved snitch revealed his plans. Vesey and his associates were executed in 1822. Sadly ironic, the #MotherEmanuel AME church he used to organized his fellow Afrikans in 1822 is the same location where the 2015 racial hate-crime massacre took place. Free the land!!! Often Black History Month brings out the same narrative of history: The all too familiar “I have a dream, Rosa Park stayed seated, maybe edgy mention of Malcolm X as our revolution’s antagonist" kind of history.
