#72 - 1975/9: Parliament - Mothership Connection

The sleeve: pretty excellently out there. Love the logo.

Had I heard this before: nothing except the sampled bits in hip-hop tunes

Woof, another tricky one. One I just don't *get* and where there's no hope of doing so within a mere three listens. Yes, it's funky. Yes, it's danceable, however different it may be from what I grew up with as dance music (Italo disco, house and techno). But there's too little of a way in for me - specifically, too little of a tune in almost all these tracks. I enjoy MC George Clinton's nonsense incantations, especially on "P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)", and that track sounds fantastic, with its expensive 70s studio production, but it's also, dare I say it, a bit... long? This gets worse towards the middle of the album, with "Unfunky UFO" and "Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication (The Bumps Bump)" floating by on the meagrest of ideas (though always in as deep a groove as you can imagine). "Give Up The Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)" is probably my favourite, before the almost unlistenable closing track with its fart noises and some of the ugliest guitar(?) soloing ever runs the good vibes.

But don't take it from me, I very much ain't got the (p-)funk.
