A final rant about Mothflight’s Vision with a bit of writing advice:
Having character motivations/changes open to interpretation is good, but you need to give hints as to why they’ve changed. The only exception for this is if it’s been a long time since the characters last saw each other. People change over time, but a bit of info on what caused them to change is good, too. Showing them react to or adapt to events in their life is another great way to have a character change.
Skystar in Mothflight’s Vision is a prime example of what NOT to do. In cases like him, the sudden change feels out of character, even if they were like this before, because they’ve already changed from this point and become a better person. Reverting them back or changing them drastically so suddenly even if they haven’t been, without being given an explanation or hints at some point (it doesn’t have to be immediately) is bad writing. There’s a fine line between leaving things up for the readers to decide and destroying a character entirely.
this makes me so mad
Silverhawk And Brown point Windstar??
silverhawk is done! heres an angry mom
MFV was written while the First Battle was either being written or had just been published, so that's why Skystar is like that in the book. He's one of my favorite characters, so it annoyed me too. The only in-universe explanation I can think of is that at the time, he was grieving for Gray Wing and worried for Tiny Branch (who later died), so this caused him to relapse. We know how poorly he handles grief. The problem is that this is never even hinted at in the book, so it's all speculation.
Thank you for that info, anon! I didn’t know it was being written during the First Battle, and honestly I think that just makes the book even worse. They added a lot of references from books after the Last Battle, and I think a lot of characters still acted as they did before, so there really was no reason for them to have Skystar still act as he did in that book.
The idea that Skystar was grieving is definitely a good explanation for his attitude! I just wish they had just told us that, too. Super Editions like this really should not be written before the events taking place before it have already happened. This was such a cool concept and they ruined it by spending way too much time on more copy pasted drama we’d already seen enough of that arc that was already resolved instead of expanding on the medicine cat code like they should have done.
You got me thinking of another small rant about this I’ll toss over into another post to avoid making this answer too long. Thank you again!
Side note: Tumblr accidentally copied this ask like three times. This site is broken as hell jesus christ
I dislike Mothflight’s Vision for multiple reasons, but there’s something I just realized about it that makes me dislike it even more. It’s been a while so feel free to correct any wrong details.
Clear Sky is deeply flawed, but an interesting character which is rare for this series where most characters are cardboard cutouts. He’s an asshole because he wants to keep everyone safe. He blames himself for the death of his mate and unborn kits. He goes to extreme lengths to keep everyone safe, but ends up pushing everyone away and hurting them instead. He takes things too far and it ends in a war that kills many cats he grew up with and cared for.
The end of his arc is focused on him realizing he just needs to let go of the past and his guilt, to trust others and be more welcoming and open to other ideas, even if it means stepping out of his comfort zone. He mostly stops being a hostile dick in the end, at least to the other Clans. While I’m not a fan of him as a person, he’s a wonderful character and is one of the more interesting antagonists this series has had.
And then Mothflight’s Vision comes around and he’s suddenly back to being a hostile dick, and it is given zero explanation. He even goes so far as to threaten a medicine cat who’s trying to save another cat’s life? And it ends in the death of his own. At this point in his arc, it’s wildly out of character. This is how he would react before the Great Battle, not long after it.
Yeah, I can understand him being wary of outsiders but Mothflight is an ally. A cat who is a part of a Clan he’s supposed to be friends with, the first medicine cat. He has to relearn a lesson he already has in this book when we’re not even given a reason as to why he’s reverted back to his old ways.
It just makes the entirety of the Dawn of the Clans arc feel pointless. Why even have Clear Sky learn the error of his ways and promise to be better if you’re just going to throw it away for the sake of cheap drama that could just have easily been solved a different way? There could have been other ways to do this, or hell, just give him a fucking reason.
Have one of his kits or clanmates be murdered by a rogue who disguises themselves in another Clan’s scent to give him a reason to be suspicious of his allies.
Or take the idea of the traitor and actually give it more evidence, more urgency. Have the traitor actively attack cats in SkyClan, whether through disguising themself or luring them into traps, and blame it on someone else.
Have some other tragedy befall SkyClan that puts him on edge and makes him close his borders for a while.
Just don’t have him be a dick again and make the previous arc practically worthless in terms of his character and not even bother to give a proper explanation
Mothflight’s Vision should have been a super edition that expanded on already good characters, not ruin them by reverting them to the way they were in the beginning and throw away any and all development that made them interesting.
I know I complain and rant about this series frequently. I love it a lot, otherwise I wouldn’t be posting about it. I’m just confused as to why they bother to put effort into making interesting and complex characters if they’re just going to butcher them later for plot convenience or worthless drama that can be achieved in literally any other way.
I'm currently reading "Mothflight's Vision" and I'm heartbroken by what happened in the plot so far. Furthermore, being a fan for like ten years makes me feel a huge nostalgia knowing that the whole Warriors story from its very beginning to now has a plot duration of approximately 40 human years. The story of the book takes place at the beginning and remembering all the connections between the ancient and present cats is just beautifully haunting. Anyone who feels the same among the Warriors fans?
