City Year application; Essay #1
I've been involved in various volunteer projects, from Christmas caroling in nursing homes, to a week long mission trip in Tennessee, to outreach programs in inner city Baltimore. Every time I volunteer, I feel like I am putting something beautiful into the world, as well as receiving much more. Serving my community makes me feel whole. Over the years I've learned that "family" is not defined by the blood in your veins, but by the hands that hold you up. I want to be the hands that hold someone up when there is no one else to turn to. I feel that, by volunteering and providing a special kind of love and commitment to the people around me, I can be those hands.
When I went to Tennessee with Confrontation Point for a missions trip there, myself and five others built a screened in porch for a woman with a degenerative immunity disease. She couldn't go outside during the day because of bodily limitations.  If she was exposed to too much sunlight or basically any kind of bug bite, she could be subjected to severe health complications. Throughout the week, Betty invited us into her home and cooked for us, telling us stories about her family. We formed a very deep connection with her. When we had finished at the end of the week, she came out onto the porch and wept. We cried with her we were all so happy. After thanking us profusely, she gave me a big hug and said that we would always be a special part of her family. What we gave to that woman was beautiful, but the love she gave to us was magnificent. I want to continue giving to the rest of the world like we were able to give to her.
