Mount Benson (Nanaimo) Sunrise
Mount Benson (April 29 2019) Nanaimo
Mount Benson Summit Sunrise (Nanaimo) June 10 2017 First attempt at a summit sunrise was disappointing. The adventure to get there was not 😊
the peak of Mount Benson (right) behind Nanaimo is visible from Pilkey Point on northern Thetis Island, British Columbia, Canada.
I wrote this one originally in October and spent a bit of time these last few days revising it, expanding the themes a bit further and whatnot (these last few busy days might I add, with working a 7 day week and moving in aaand my birthday). I’ve also decided this will be the title poem for my next book, to be published some time next year.
Fangs, Mostly
Today I could have gone to the store to get some beer, the stores aren’t far away,
a mile at most but when you have a new leg to walk on the miles have mostly fangs,
claws the cats of the woods have and wolves teeth our Canadian parents said to be afraid of,
My dad said be careful, toy guns are only for shooting bears, not people, some people take the advice too far, others not at all.
I’m sure I could have been a hunter, had fate allowed I could have been the one to run to the Woods and live with wolves,
Instead I am a homemaker, exchanging recipes and gossip with the wives while the husbands are out shooting.
With only one foot the colds last Longer too, I would take the bus but It will take too long, I would walk but with
Crutches I might fall. So, I may as well stay home.
Some reason will always make itself Known, I’ve noticed, While reaching for my keys and jacket-
I have the laundry to do the pumpkins to carve and bake the turkey to place in the sink for thanksgiving There’s a slight wind now and it might rain The wives are on their way Anyway, They’ll be here any minute.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t as Timid when I was younger Or as fearful as a man,
But one time I chased a deer off the trail towards Mt. Benson, One time I climbed Mt. Benson and wondered If Jesus could walk on water could he Walk on the wind as well?
Some days after school I’d climb as far from the trees as possible And walk home on a breeze,
My mom said Be careful, you might get kidnapped, The CHEK TV news said it too, I even read in a book,
I walked further than I could throw a rock and break my bedroom window But now I tell myself “not on crutches.”
Where I’m living I can see the mountain where I used to hike And count the distance in crutch steps, I’ll do it someday, I say When I can walk again,
I wonder if I’ll run again, I wonder about the river in Mission Where my friends and I had to jump from Stone to stone for two kilometers,
I wonder about hiking, I wonder about climbing, I wonder about skiing, I wonder about love.
I know While staying at home is fine sometimes we Humans were made for adventure, A ship to sail, a map to explore, or a Trail to run through,
even the people who are afraid They’ll never run as Fast or as far as other humans.
The thing is,
whatever scary things could happen already have,
whatever conclusions you draw before you leave for your adventure will surely come to life, However frightful your imagination makes them,
So here’s my advice: In your story write yourself as the brave one, The one who runs with wolves and Rides on the scales of dragons,
The one who climbs and skis and Jumps from boulder to boulder,
The one who would never let a Silly old thing like losing a foot keep you down.

Certain songs have to be played loud enough to fill the house. Loud enough to turn heads at the stoplight. Loud enough to spur kids to dance with wild abandon.
I’d like to go back 5 years and see Apollo Ghosts play a small room in Vancouver.
