The finished Mount Mansfield project under the official title of “I WAKE UP SAD NOW” plus the box I keep it in
This book holds a lot of emotional weight within it as I created it after my sister died in an accident on February 5th, 2017 I wanted a way to create time and space for me to feel my grief. In a way, working on this book became a ritualized experience that occupied my life in some way for a little over a year. Grief is a wild ride, it is experienced emotionally and physically. The first couple of months were mostly numb and cold. Grief tasted like ice and I was at war with the past tense. But as time went on it gradually changed and it started settling inside of me, I would constantly have dreams in which I realized that my sister was dead and would wake up sad. Not like depressed sad, but deeply resigned. Now as it has been 2 years grief has settled into my bones, it is easy to find and I think it is something that I will carry forever but it isn’t at the front of my mind. You just get used to it.
I chose Mount Mansfield because it was my sister’s favorite mountain.
The book is supposed to be read right to left but as it is a book of maps it is extremely easy to read the book from left to right. My intention was to create a feeling of dissonance between those that know the proper reading order and those who come to the book without realizing it, although most people seem to have a lot of trouble reading the book right to left even if they know. Personally, I had a lot of trouble dealing with the fact that the entire world changed for me and for the ones close to my sister but that it did not change for anyone else. Baring extreme celebrities, I think this is most people’s experience with death and grief.
It’s a Coptic bound book with maple wood covers. There are 56 papercut map squares cut with excel blades and into Strathmore series charcoal paper and folded into 28 signatures. These were stuck to black Canson Mi-Teintes with double-sided archival tack. White Canson Mi-Teintes was used for the title and conclusion pages and the text was laser-etched into it.
