Brocken Spectre, Binsey - Lake District National Park. A sunset panorama captured yesterday evening on the summit of Binsey, complete with Brocken Spectre. Not long before this image was taken, the summit was completely shrouded in hill fog. However, as the sun disappeared over the distant horizon the mist suddenly cleared revealing this tremendous view towards the northern hills of the Lake District. As it was so unexpected, it was a quick dash to get my equipment set up in time to capture this view, including the Brocken Spectre. This phenomenon is where the shadow of an observer is magnified and cast upon clouds opposite the Sun's direction. In about 20 or so years of fell-walking I've only encountered a handful of these, so to be able to capture one here when I had my full equipment and with such a great vantage point was truly amazing. I wanted to showcase the whole vista, so captured numerous images to form a panoramic picture. Naturally, I captured my first image with the cairn and Brocken Spectre as I knew it wouldn't last long.
