Um, I mean, she untied her hair (ほどく, hodoku, to untie, unfasten) and parted it with her left hand, and in that space – in the middle of her head – appeared a giant mount (大きな口, ooki na kuchi).

It ate this and that. With a steady rhythm the wife threw one rice ball after another into that pure red mouth (つぎつぎ, tsugitsugi, one after another; なげこむ, nagekomu, to throw into).

That mouth-head ate as many rice balls as it like (i.e., all of them). Then the miso soup poured into the head. (There’s a bunch of “fun” sound effects here; アフアフ, afuafu, sound of chomping; and ザアザア, zaa zaa, the sound of pouring).

“So now I know why the rice and miso vanished. What a terrible woman I’ve taken for a wife,” said Gosaku, making the understatement of the century (I added that part). Gosaku was thoroughly frightened by it all.
