Build the business and build the brand to bend, not break. - "A tree that is unbending is easily broken" - Lao Tzu - We are moving faster and faster into the thicket of more complexity, and are facing unprecedented levels of interconnectedness. We know perfection is a myth; and in these fast-paced high flux markets we operate in, mistakes, errors, and other forms of failure are inevitable. - So don't try and build systems to avoid or insulate yourself from fallouts. Instead, build systems that are resilient - designed to recognize when resisting failure costs more than yielding to it. Below are some ways to be more resilient as a business and brand builder: - 1. Have low outstanding debt (preferably zero) - 2. Have low overhead fixed costs, and operating expenses - 3. Have sustainable cash reserves for unexpected contingencies (i.e. back up emergency $$$) - 4. Multiple independent products & services / industries / lines of business - 5. Flexible team - team members with diverse skill sets who can perform different responsibilities at a high level (i.e. Everyone can do different types of jobs well) - 6. Fluid and unobstructed communication amongst team members - 7. Redundancies - 'fail safes' and backup systems for all core processes and key activities. - Once you've grasped the concept of resiliency for your business or brand, you can take it a step further and learn how to gain or profit from your failures - to design systems that grow stronger from every failure or shock they incur (see Naseem Taleb & Antifragility).
