10 Movies You Need to Watch
by Ace Mamaril
If you know me personally, then you’d know that I’m a huge fan of films and series, even though my brother and my frog-looking friend say otherwise. I truly am a movie lover. How can I not be when there’s nothing much to do in our dorm other than to watch movies all day? Anyway, if you don’t really cherish movies… “How can you not like movies? Not liking movies is like not liking puppies. You need to learn. You need a moviecation!” (-Jesse, Pitch Perfect) So I suggest you watch the following and turn to the fun side. Yes, y’all, this is a moviecation! If you haven’t seen any of these films then you’re clearly missing out on life. So go get your chips and coffee ready, and treat yourself to a lengthy movie marathon.
10. The Bucket List
This movie was actually suggested to me by my roommate, Celine, and my fugly brother, Ryan. I just watched it once; a couple of months ago. But it made a really big impact in my life. The Bucket List is about two people with cancer and only has a few months to live who decided to go on an adventure at the last days of their life. Beware; this movie is a definite tear-jerker! Get your tissues ready! But even though you will cry your heart out while watching this, you will also know the true value of life. You will realize how important making the most out of everything is. Because when you’re dying in a hospital bed and waiting for your time, you will remember every chance you didn’t take and the things you didn’t say. You will regret not putting yourself out there and doing the things you love. So while you’re still alive and kicking, I suggest you start really living.
9. Pitch Perfect 2
This movie is the sequel to Pitch Perfect. Before I get on explaining why I love it, I just want to say that every line said by Fat Amy here is absolutely hilarious! Especially: “She said she’s Asian Jesus.” I literally laughed until I was teary-eyed. (No offense to religious people though.)
Anyway, the Bellas has a new rival group in this film. And it’s DSM (Da Sound Machine, apparently). Even though I love Becca, Fat Amy, Stacy, Chloe and all their pals… I still think DSM should’ve won the World A capella Championship. Am I the only DSM fan here? Maybe it’s because I’m into the genre of songs they’re singing, I don’t know. I honestly think DSM’s last performance is beyond amazing.
(…waiting for the third movie. Lol.)
8. The Fault in Our Stars
Hmm, where do I begin? Boi, let me tell you… HOW THIS MOVIE RIPPED MY HEART OUT, STOMPED ON IT, SHREDDED IT TO PIECES, BROKE IT IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE AND THEN THREW IT IN A TRASH CAN. Thanks, John Green! Yeah, thank you so much for toying with my feelings!
Anyway, I assume y’all know this movie so there’s no need for a ‘get your tissues ready’ warning before watching it. I think most of you have watched it. If you haven’t, then what the fuck are you doing with your life? Get your ass on fmovies.to right now and watch the damn movie!
Like most girls, Augustus Waters is also my dream guy. I mean, who is stupid enough to not like him? Augustus, or Gus, is the type of guy that most girls should like, and not the bad guys with sad eyes and mouth full of white lies that other girls fall for. (Saw that Halsey reference? Lol.) Augustus is funny, charming, caring, kind and, boy oh boy, he’s attractive. And oh yeah, he also broke everyone’s heart. No big deal.
Hazel Grace, on the other hand, is not really… noticeable. She’s simple. “She isn’t loved widely, but she is loved deeply.” -- (Excerpt from The Fault In Our Stars). And when Augustus and Hazel gets together, they create the sweetest love story within numbered days, so sweet that you would want to believe that everything’s gonna be okay too. But no, there are no happy endings in reality. Just like what John Green wrote, you don’t get to choose whether you get hurt in this life. You only get a say on who hurts you. And Hazel Grace is happy with her choice.
7. 13 Going on 30
Okay, admit it, we all dreamed about being 30 when we were 13 too! I remember I was excited about putting on some heels, going to Prom, wearing cute dresses and dating a hot guy when I was 13 years old. But now that I’m 19, I realize my stupidity. First of all, heels are a real killer. Second, prom sucks. It’s basically just paying a lot of money for cheap food and a dance with your crush. Third, I’m certain that dresses ain’t my thing. And lastly, dating isn’t as simple as I thought it was. What this movie wants to tell us is that we are looking forward for the wrong stuff in life. We’re supposed to be excited about growing up, maturing, falling in love, getting married. But instead, we anticipate the money, the things we’ll own, the status we’ll achieve, and that’s just really messed up.
6. Crazy Little Thing Called Love
I was still an innocent and imbecile sophomore when I first watched this. It actually encouraged me to do something really, really half-witted. It encouraged me to say my feelings out loud. And it’s not like I regret it, because I don’t. You see, I believe that ‘oh well’ is better than ‘what if’. It was just... embarrassing. But if I have a time machine and a chance to go back to that part of my life, I’d do it again. I don’t care if it spread through the whole school. I don’t care if I get rejected. I don’t care if I look like a fool. All I care about is that I have no regrets. Carpe Diem, bitch.
By the way, Mario Maurer looks like a total hottie in this film! Teehee.
5. The Purge: Anarchy
I know I’m such a creep for declaring this but I love the violence in this movie! I really dig movies that feature professional killers. Don’t judge me (lol).
The main character, the ex-soldier, is really baleful in here. And the whole thing is an eye-opener. It shows how unfair the rich and the poor is treated in our society and how each of your wrongdoing has a price. The rich won’t always be on top. The poor won’t always stay down below.
(If the Annual Purge is also practiced in our country, would you kill?)
4. The Spectacular Now
Sneak peak: Sutter is the world’s biggest cliché. He’s a party animal. He’s a rule-breaker. He has a hot girlfriend. He drinks beer and gives no fucks about the future. He lives in the moment. For me, he’s a carpe diem kind of guy. His life is so lit… until one day, her girlfriend decides to dump him.
Amy is actually Sutter’s opposite. Amy is nice and sweet and smart and inexperienced. She’s a straight-A kind of girl. And she has her life planned out.
And then, Sutter meets Amy.
To be honest, this movie makes me want to believe that one person can truly affect you so much, in your decisions and in how you see things. You meet that person, and your life is changed forever.
3. Dead Poets Society
“O Captain! My Captain!”
This was actually suggested by my frog-looking friend, Migs (if you’re reading this, #sorrynotsorry lol).
Friends, I tell you, this movie will make you realize how fucked up our education system is, how poetry can support you through the stages of life, how momentous teachers really are and most importantly, how we shouldn’t just shrug off mental illnesses like depression. This movie talks about the fatal flaws of humanity and will make you want to do something about it. So if you’re into meaningful and life-changing movies then I highly suggest you watch this.
2. 10 Things I Hate About You
I chose this film as my #2 because of the following reasons:
I love the main character, Kat, because she’s such a badass. She doesn’t give a damn about what other people think of her and that takes a lot of guts. She’s right though. Why do we need to live up to everybody’s expectations? Why do we dress up to impress people we don’t even really care about? What’s the point of building this image for ourselves when we know deep inside that it’s all untrue?
It’s really good that Bianca didn’t turn out to be who I thought she was.
Have you seen Heath Ledger in this film? Oh my gosh!
It’s based from my favourite work of Shakespeare, The Taming of the Shrew.
The last part where Kat reads her poem in front of the entire class is a real tear-jerker.
Oh, and if anybody’s curious, my favourite character is Mr. Morgan.
1. He’s just not that Into You
Alright folks, here we are! This is my #1 pick! If you haven’t seen this movie, then I suggest you see it now. Not only does it possess an interesting plot, but it also teaches its viewers a lot of very important stuff to know about dating, marriage or, simply, love. Now, I know some of the guy readers are rolling their eyes at the moment but come on! Don’t pretend like you feel nothing! Everybody feels or felt something. Don’t be disgusted by cheesy “girl” movies because I know deep down you like this kind of films too. You shouldn’t be ashamed to feel. You shouldn’t be afraid to feel.
To all girls and boys who have no experience in dating but is currently in love with someone yet unsure if the person likes them back, here is your chance to avoid so much heartache! Go watch the movie and learn from it. I’ve said you shouldn’t be ashamed to feel but of course you should still know when to let go. You should know when to slap yourself in the face and wake the fuck up. If he or she is always not texting/ calling you back, then he or she is not interested. If he or she doesn’t show you he or she wants you, then he or she is not interested. Believe me, if he or she likes you then he or she will do something about it. At this point, if you still think your crush likes you then congratulations! But if not…sorry, pal. Life isn't a movie and we don’t always get what we want. But you know what? There’s more to life than that person who refuses to text you back.
And that’s it, folks! My list of top 10 must-watch films! How do you like it? Are any of my favourites in your top 10 list too? Do you also have a movie suggestion for me? I'd love to know!
