Moving is usually stressful enough for humans but it’s also a stressful time for your dog. However, there are some things you can do to make a move easier for your dog. Here are some tips for moving with your dog.

  1. Make sure that your dog has his own crate.

Whether you use it for traveling or as a safe place for your dog to go to during the move, the crate can be an invaluable investment. If your dog isn’t used to using a crate, get the crate several weeks before the big move and help your dog get used to it. Put treats and toys in the crate and encourage your dog to go inside. Leave the door open so your dog can explore. Put food in the crate. Let him learn that the crate is a good place.

  2. If you’re moving locally, take your dog to the new place and let him look around.

Take him inside and let him sniff the new place out. Let him look over the new yard or take him for a walk around the neighborhood. Allowing your dog to see the new home when it’s not as stressful as it will be on moving day will help him adjust.

  3. Have new identification made for your dog.

Get new ID tags for his collar with your new address and phone number. If your dog has

a microchip make sure you call the chip company with your new address. Call your vet to update your dog’s information. Updating your dog’s data can help in case your dog gets loose during the move.

Moving + dog biscuit review

We are moving to Seattle in two weeks.  YEE.

We're getting a huge yard.  SO MUCH BIGGER.  With lots of grass and it's cool enough to go outside during the day to do fetch with Yoshi, instead of waiting until the night time.  I'm so excited!  I think Yoshi will love it.

I'm really thinking this move will help us work with socializing Yoshi more, because we know so many more people in Seattle than in Phoenix.  It also seems more dog friendly in general, which is great.  We live very close to a beach park on Lake Washington that dogs are allowed in, so I'm stoked about that.  

I'm a little worried about how Yoshi will do in the new house - when we moved into our house at the beginning of the year, she would urinate in the same spot every couple of days for a couple of weeks.  I'm hoping we can avoid that this time around, since most of this house is carpet, and not tile like we're used to.

I'm really excited about the move and to bring Yoshi up here.  I'm also worried about the trip (a 2-3 day trip), but other than that, I think it will be smooth sailing.

Also I made Yoshi some pumpkin and peanut butter biscuits from a recipe that the fabulous doggydayjob linked me too.  Here is the recipe.  Yoshi really liked them and I left her a nice sized batch while we were up here looking at houses.  I sort of flubbed and made bigger biscuits instead of the little circles that it looks like in this recipe, but they still came out ok.  I also subbed out the rice flour for oat flour by grinding up some oatmeal in my mini blender.  It was really easy.  I will probably make them again for her since she seemed to enjoy them so much.
