Some Info on Rem

Rem is the name of the business that the Dreamon’s run in this world. Its a shortened version of the name of their home dimension, MerreM.

REM is actually an acronym for Rapid Eye Movement sleep which is the stage of sleep where someone starts dreaming. However, the Dreamons and employees just call the company Rem. 

A few years ago, Rem popped up in Kaleidope literally overnight and while its arrival raised some brows it did not sound any alarms for the public. If anything it generated curiosity. Normally folks dont even blink at a new business moving into town, no matter what it is, but a living building was certainly a fun spectacle to behold. With such a monstrous building now inhabiting the skyline it didnt take long for locals to dub the new structure, the monster office.

Folks who built up the courage to enter the halls of Rem and discover what business was concocted here were met with an odd but whimsical world. Some questioned if it was a business at all and not some sort of indoor amusement park. But the creatures inside, who called themselves Dreamons, assured guests they were running a legit company (at least their version of one). But what kind of services could they be offering?

While the department of business in Kaleidope identifies Rem as a wish granting service this classification can be a little misleading. Like the traditional lore of a demon, the Dreamons make deals. However, they dont want any part of your soul, thats no good to them. Instead they want your ideas, your inspiration, your dreams and memories.

The Dreamons travel the universe in search of new experiences to add to their growing knowledge. They, in a way, are artists and feel compelled to discover new and exciting things frequently so that their work does not go stale. While they do attempt to create their own encounters, some things they just cant recreate and instead need a perspective outside their own. Thus they make deals with residents from all over the universe, granting them knowledge in exchange for knowledge. This is the main business of Rem.

This Dreamons conduct their business all over the world, not just in Kaleidope. You can say that Rem has small offices all over and The Monster Office is just the HQ. After all, there are only 12 Hueminns and they have a lot to do. To make things manageable, lesser dreamons often take care of smaller deals, Hueminns are only called for big business, world changing stuff. You may then be wondering what HQ does. Well, its honestly more of a place for the Dreamons to play at running a business, its just an experience for them trying to run a company. They attempt to make it seem as legit as possible but obviously run into a few miscommunications. 

While the overall purpose of the monster office is actually a little underwhelming, there are several businesses within that are managed by the individual Hueminn’s in accordance with their interests. For example, Oranhamme runs a restaurant, Chartrand runs a night club, Magerite owns a matchmaking service, Red hosts a fight club, and so on and so forth. These smaller businesses run at varying hours, some after the normal hours of the Monster Office and some are open during normal business hours. 

Thus, hopefully this gives a little more insight to the whacky business that is the Monster office.

A short history of Kaleidope Kounty

Pronounced (Kah-lie-doe-pee )

There is no historical record of what the area now known as Kaleidope was beforehand. Many folks have their beliefs and there are always rumors that float around but none with sufficient evidence to be trusted as fact.

What folks do know is that Kaleidope started as a trade route between multiple dimensions. The area on this planet where Kaleidope eventually came to be founded had a lot of spatial anomalies that allowed portals from various dimensions to form. Due to this, a sort of crossroads was established as creatures from all over the universe would pass through and even began to trade goods with one another.

Eventually someone started up an outpost on this land allowing for dimensional travelers to actually stay and rest instead of just conducting a quick transaction and continuing their merry way. It came as no surprise when more and more folks began to actually settle down at this outpost and try to stake out a living for themselves. More businesses opened and more homes were built. What was once a small rest spot transformed into a flourishing town consisting of all sorts of clashing cultures. This collision is what helped to give the town its name, Kaleidope. The name played off the sound of the word ‘collide’ and a kaleidoscope, an instrument that reflects light off objects of various shapes and colors to create a dazzling inspiring design.

While the town belonged to no one group and the people there prided themselves on their diverse community it was inevitable that there would be conflicts between folks. Everyone in town originated from different cultures and new tenants were arriving on a frequent basis so there were bound to be growing pains. As the town grew bigger and became more of a city it became clear that some form of government would be necessary to establish order in the community.  And so after much deliberation it was done. Laws and regulations were put into place with flexibility to accommodate change because Kaleidope didn’t stop growing.

Kaleidope grew from a  city to a metropolis then practically into its own country. While its size might not be impressive the sheer amount of ingenuity and variety that existed in this place truly made it a gem. Folks from around the planet (and other worlds)  saw this hub as a place where literally anything could happen.  That still holds true to this day.

This blurb on the history of Kaleidope may be short but the place has actually now existed for multiple millenniums. Folks consider it an ancient city that never died because it continued to change and reinvent itself over time. Nowadays it possesses its own culture and style which stems from its multiple influences its had over the years. Its a motley metropolis where you can meet anything and anyone and it is still constantly changing.

Part of its ever changing nature comes from the fact that there are still open portals to other dimensions. However, the majority of the population remains unaware of their existence. You see, Kaleidope grew to be so big and so cluttered with everything that the portals were practically buried and became hidden. They are still open and things can come through but for the most part they stay forgotten because at this point the people are so accustomed to seeing all sorts of things on a daily basis that its no surprise when a newcomer arrives.  New arrivals practically can blend right in the moment they’re in Kaleidope.

Thus, to end this I want to say that Kaleidope is a motley modern metropolis comprised of creatures of all shapes and sizes, from all different worlds and dimensions. There are still new arrivals but a lot of the creatures here have lived here a very long time. Some have been here so long that they have evolved to no longer resemble their original form.  There are all types of magic that exist in this county and most of the time no one bats an eye when its used. In fact many businesses are founded on these different types of magic and how they can be used for practical purposes. There a lot of unique experiences to be had and many more unique people to meet in this place and all of its considered normal and natural.

MO Worldbuild-ey stuff.

Dreamon’s are not native to Kalleidope (or whatever world this is). They actually come from their own realm also called REM which is a sort of mindspace/scape that exists in-between dimensions. Its kinda its own place but connected to all sorts of other dimensions and worlds. 

REM is inhabited only by Dreamons and is a place that is easily manipulated and altered.  The Dreamons kind of visit various dimensions and  carry their world with them wherever they go in the form of their abilities to warp reality. Nothing on a grand scale mind you but for example Yelloneus’ ability to tamper with time or Oranhamme’s talent for manipulating material things.  They use these abilities across worlds stating that they wish to share their passions and inspire people all over the multi-verse.

For this dimension they created a business that is meant to make a client’s dreams a reality. The way they go about this kinda mimics an agency. Basically a client can find a Dream Agent and explain their dream. It can be as simple as wanting to visit someplace in the world or meeting your favorite pop idol or something on a much grander and more complicated scale like ruling the world. mind you there is a price to pay equivalent to the dream you’re asking for. From there Dream Agents basically work to make these things happen but not in a snap your fingers and poof your wish is granted kinda way. Dreamons more manipulate things in the backgrounds to create circumstances and opportunities that allow for a more direct path for a client. It can take time and it takes effort on the client’s part so this method of wish fulfillment isnt for everyone but some may consider it a bit safer than other options.  The MO office is an HQ of sorts so we dont really see clients at the office too much, there are like small agencies set up everywhere that are in communication with HQ and the Dreamons so the Dreamons can work their stuff.  This is all still a work in progress but I thought I’d share since I was trying to like specify what REM does and the Dreamons and their purpose. I feel like I should mention that beings from other worlds probably should not try to visit REM as REM tends to start altering and warping outsiders into unrecognizable ever-shifting things. Its like if you were stuck in a dream forever with everything changing to the point you dont even know who you are or where you are and never will because you’re just lost in this forever changing landscape and your mind just changes with it.

Hey Fairy! I was wondering how you'd explain/summarize the relations between offices (MO & Nightmare Inc) as well as the outside businesses of the same world & their relations vice versa, to people that were new to the concept and were interested in joining? Specifically, in a way that would help gain perspective to what role in society their monster(s) would best be suited in playing. Whether that would be working as an employee or outside in the vicinity. I hope that makes sense!

I think I got this so I’ll try to answer and if I miss anything feel free to send a supplemental question. This will be long.

The company REM popped up almost overnight. One night there was an empty lot for sale and the next there was a monstrous skyscraper there without any warning. It was jarring to the public at first and caused a bit of a sensation. For a while there was nothing but quiet from this mysterious business which lead to all sorts of speculation varying from positive to negative. Finally the doors opened and the Dreamons emerged to announce to the city and world their purpose here and what they were selling. Dreams! Well, everyone loves dreams and practically everyone has dreams so the pitch initially was a big success and got a lot of interest. However with any big to-do comes a lot of backlash and there were all sorts of suspicions about who these Dreamons really are, after all they sound similar to demons, and things come at a price so they must be trying to trick the masses. Well, whatever the hub bub was about there was publicity and lots of it so customers started coming and business started booming and the Dreamons figured theyd need extra help. Not only to assist with running a business but also to integrate more with this world. After all if they had employees from this plane of existence maybe the public would be a little less scrutinizing. There were a lot of applications, after all it was gaining a reputation and so when word got out they were hiring a lot of people applied. Monsters and humans applied but there was  bit of an issue with humans. They seemed to be far more susceptible to the dream-like atmosphere of the building and over time began to change...this created a bit of another scandal for them and they were accused of all sorts of things. Like most scandals it passed. The Dreamons changed their contract to include that humans and even human like monsters understand they might experience alterations while working for the company. This event though did give them their nickname “The Monster Office” and its pretty much called that by the city folk. Its not necessarily a bad thing though its just...a thing. It didnt really affect the business aspect so much though mostly just the employee side. Monsters are just more resilient to magic of the Dreamons (which is another worldbuilding story).In relation with other businesses some of the neighbors complain about shenanigans (especially after this event) but their part in the community is overall a positive one. Being from another dimension they know not everything they do and make is compatible so they make ties with other businesses both large companies (like Midnight Inc.) and smaller businesses. They purchase magic from this plane from Midnight, they purchase materials and supplies from other companies (such as food or fabric) and even maybe make deals with shops. (If a lot of REM employees visit a specific location REM may reach out and go ‘hey will advertise you if you give REM employees/customers discounts) and that sorta thing.In a business thats about making dreams a reality you gotta have a network and access to a lot of things and thats what REM tries to do. At this point they still have that reputation of bein a lil bit of an oddball corporation but they are also part of the city and community. Thus an employee applying there would probably just be another person applying for another job. Employees may get questions from some peeps like ‘oh whats it like in there I heard its weird’ or something like that. Hopefully that answered your question
