Subtle differences in software
Notice: Most of this is speculation and I have very little to back my thoughts up, so please take with a pile of salt. It’s more an anecdotal observation instead of a legit study.
So... I recently made the switch from Google Chrome back to Mozilla Firefox and the commentary from this TED Talk got me thinking. Around 8.5 to 9 minutes in the speaker talks about YouTube. Specifically YouTube recommending (and auto-playing unless you’ve disabled auto-play) videos that encourage more and more extremist views (whether left or right) as you spend time on the site. Videos about Trump rallies leading to nazi and anti-semetic videos, but also vegetarian videos leading to vegan videos. She comments that it’s almost like YouTube wants you to be an extremist. This has been rolling around in my mind all day. And it does so not because the makers of YouTube wants to encourage extremism, but because more clicks == more ad revenue, and more extreme videos tend to generate clicks.
What does this have to do with Firefox versus Chrome? It’s been a bit of an adjustment for me. Being ADHD I tend to have a show running in the background while I do my homework. Unless I’m doing intensive reading having the idle chatter really helps my anxiety quiet, helps my ADHD stay engaged and I actually get stuff done. But since I made the switch to Firefox there has been a hitch in this system. If on Netflix or Hulu... nothing autoplays. Sure I’ll have a video going (usually an episode of some inane sitcom like The Office) but once the episode is over? I have to switch tabs back to that show before it will autoplay. This doesn’t happen with youTube playlists that I’ve built for my music sure, but still, I have to deliberately engage in most video content before the next bit will load.
Compare and contrast to Chrome, where I could go 2-3 hours with a show going before I was deliberately poked and asked if I was still watching. Is this the smoking gun that shows how nefarious Google is trying to get more revenue? Not by a long shot, but in the context of the TED talk? It’s interesting to think about. Jury’s out if this continues when I use my YouTube playlists more, or if heaven forbid i re-enabled auto-play on non-playlist media.
Member of the European Parliament
