I ranted in a forum post, and I actually like it. So if you want to read about underinvestment in public health. here ya go
We are currently experiencing the direct noticeable correlations that comes from decades of underinvestment in public health. Our health systems: local, state and federal, are all showing the signs of their limits after being understaffed, underfunded and unprepared for any and all public health emergencies. We had already seen the health inequities in the H1N1 epidemic in 2009 and 2010, yet only supplemental funds were thrown at the issue as a quick band-aid fix. These are all high-level glaring issues; however, I want to focus in on the less noticeable impacts of underinvestment. Americans spend the most money on health care yet they aren’t getting any healthier. The Issue Report from Trust for America’s Health says one reason is due to the lack of focus on prevention. I disagree, chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension are results of lifestyle habits in conjunction to genetic predispositions. These are a result of environmental factors, like availability and affordability of fresh produce, having the time/money to exercise, and individual demands of earning a wage. Public health officials need to move beyond the realm of health information awareness and engage with the root causes of why these chronic conditions happen in the first place. Telling someone that they need to eat more fresh foods and vegetables to maintain a healthy lifestyle when they live off a salary of $15,000 a year would more likely shame that individual for how they currently live not meet them where they are. The average ICU costs for individuals who are insured is around $10,000, for those who are uninsured its more than $26,000. As Gaffney et al states, 4 in 10 US adults are unable to cover a $400 emergency expense. Doing a quick google search, I was able to find that “44% of U.S. workers are employed in low-wage jobs that pay median annual wages of $18,000”, in other words 4 in 10 US adults (Picchi, 2019). The underinvestment of public health has impacted officials being unable to work on the social determinants of health and provide advocacy on how to improve health and health equity. The underinvestment of public health isn’t just impacting our ability to mitigate emergencies as they arise, but the every day issues that Americans are facing.
