a van jordan - mpho manye
A.Van Jordan like many poets chooses to use poetry as a medium between his respected artistic world, and the world in which he is trying to communicate with. I as an actor, am equipped with many ways in which I can communicate or reflect on another piece of artistic work that differs from my own. I realized that in using your own art form to communicate thoughts and expressions about other art forms, we reinforce the sense that all things artistic in essence speak one common language. I found a common language between acting and dancing.
Much like dancers, actors bodies are their instruments. With our ligaments we portray a vast array of emotions. As an actor we often work to seek out emotional vulnerability, and some of us are already there. Whereas in dance, a majority of the dancers are already susceptible to this place of vulnerability. In the piece “I’m Staying” by the KaliAndrews Dance Company the dancers move in perfect unison. You can feel the energy being shared by the 3 girls as they grace the stage. As a response to that I as an actor would have to in some way portray the same intensity and grace. Me and 3 other actors would share the stage and send our message through one unified action.
Amaud Jamaul Johnson - Mpho Manye
For this prompt the celebrity of my choice would be Drake. To me Drakes relevance and music is a perfect combination to promote awareness to racism. Drake’s fan base stretches to every corner of the earth, and once he begins to not agree with certain things people do, then that person has the world against them. His music is not only about his life, but also people who relate to it can indulge themselves. Much of the classes in my metier require me to let go, meaning that I should sccumb to the excersise and training. With Drake, I find it easier to sccumb to his music, the message is always strong and his lyricism is unmatched. There are some who might try and argue otherwise, but in my opinion it is unmatched.
Yona Harvey Response - Mpho Manye
Ostinato – a musical figure or phrase that persistently repeats in a composition.
In Yona Harvey’s “Sound Part 3,” I immediately noticed the tone in which the italicized words provided after each sentence. Yona Harvey is known for using this and other forms of literary writing to bring in her readers. I enjoyed how she used the italics in creating a musical component to the poem, much like a pastor would when he does the call and response with the congregation. The repetition could pose as some sort of hook to the poem, further reinforcing the “meat” of it all. As far as contextual imagery, it compliments the melodic poem by posing as different pitches. I enjoyed how Yona Harvey uses these two in a harmonious way getting the best of what they both have to offer. Acting out
Whats the purpose of creating a melody with a poem?
What is the overall tone of the poem?
How do the italics correlate with the imagery?
Metier Response by Mpho Manye
My metier is acting, and as an actor I believe that we are seen as communicators. We use the stage and screen to communicate a vast a majority of topics. Whether it be politics or love, actors serve as that middle man between an ideal world and what the world is really like. I recently read an article discussing the rising tensions in Ferguson. What I took from the article (and others like it) was that they were all focused on retribution for a wounded police officer.
These articles failed to cover the important things about Ferguson and what really is going on. This is where my project comes in. Too much of todays world is encompassed by the media. As humans we cannot be everywhere at once so we rely on them to provide us with “truth,” but at our expense. As a project for actors, I would like to organize a staging consisting of 4 actors. 2 actors will be labeled as people, and the other 2 will be labeled as media. The “media” actors will be informing the “people” actors of days events, but withholding the truth from them.
The objective of this project is to mimic the public's dependence on media, to the point where obtaining information on ones own has become obsolete.
do you think that McCrae uses that writing style to paint a picture of his emotional mindset?
Does repetition serve as a better form of emotional expression?
Could McCrae be expressing his repressed emotions through poetry?
