A line for seeing human nature

For @janeuary-month day 23: court~

Mrs Rooke left her patient sleeping soundly at last and, the baby being with its wet-nurse, was confident that her rest would be restorative. The hour was rather late and she felt the necessity of resting herself while she was not needed elsewhere, but on the way to the servants quarters she passed by the study, where Colonel Wallace was shut up with his friend.

It did not do to listen, of course, but how could one help hearing when gentlemen failed to modulate their voices?

"Is it not providential, Wallace?” Mr Elliot exclaimed. “The very same young woman I happened upon at Lime!”

“Extraordinary,” came the amused reply.

“I never was so agreeably surprised in my life! Such an unlooked for blessing; I shall no longer be fatigued to death in Camden Place. Upon my honour, it was eleven before I was aware of it! Now here is a woman worth your acquaintance, Wallace, and worth my attention.”

Mrs Rooke stood quite still, cradling the bedlinens.

“My dear Elliot, you can hardly make yourself equally agreeable to two sisters at once."

"Ha! Had I not know it to be true, I would not have believed them to be sisters. A greater difference was never seen, I assure you. I have never been half so well entertained while calling there before; it will be of great service to me to have such an inducement to return.”

“I cannot imagine it such a hardship to look upon Miss Elliot thrice a week.”

“Miss Elliot is handsome to be sure, but a woman wants intelligence and sweetness of temper to give distinction to her features. Miss Anne is loveliness itself.”

“I see what you are about. Well, I wish you good fortune, with all my heart, but I advise you to be quite decided. Had I paid any attention to Mrs Wallace’s sister before taking notice of her, she would not have had me.”

“Had you paid attention to Miss Alford, the whole town would have known of it. Your frankness is the worst of you, my friend.”

“And what of it!” boasted the Colonel. “Well, shall we have another glass, or shall we leave off for the night.”

“I had better get home.”

As this sighing reply was immediately followed by the movement of chairs, Mrs Rooke speedily took herself hence with the skilful, soundless steps of a domestic. So Sir Walter’s second daughter had come to Bath at last! That was a piece of news indeed. Especially if a man such as Mr Elliot was inclined to make so much of her. Ah, to be young and the talk of the town. She privately wished Miss Anne Elliot great joy of it and a good husband into the bargain, and retired to her room to rest.

Do behind-the-scenes anecdotes count as propaganda?

Samuel West (Mr Elliot, Persuasion 1995) is an ambassador for Jane Austen’s House, and recently led a discussion there of “What makes a good Jane Austen adaptation”?

(His introduction includes the question, “Who’s your Darcy - Laurence Olivier? Colin Firth? Matthew Macfadyen?” so he would totally get the vibe of this tournament.)

It's a great discussion - it focuses not only on Persuasion 1995 (starting at about 45 minutes in) but also on Sense and Sensibility 1995, Mansfield Park 1999, and even a bit on Pride and Prejudice 1995 (namely, why it was so important to have Darcy jump in the lake).

A few highlights:

Samuel West was rather cross at being asked to read for Mr Elliot - until he learned that Captain Wentworth was being played by Ciarán Hinds.

Because the costume designer for Persuasion 1995 didn’t have a big budget but did have time to be creative, she was able to make a great-looking, visually distinctive costume for Mr Elliot out of incredibly cheap materials - billiard-table cloth and mattress ticking.

Filming in candlelight, with triple-wicked candles, leaves actors’ nostrils completely black.

You can spot the cads in 1990s Jane Austen adaptations by their very pointy sideburns.

Samuel West saying Ciaran Hinds is so hot I'm not even offended you don't consider me competition is propaganda. This has also just sent me down a rabbit hole of examining all the 1990s actors sideburns and they really are all very pointy
