Some of my Onus headcanons as his number 1 fan 😋

A lot of these are built off what small slivers of canon information we have about him and his species as well as some of my own worldbuilding I made with @helmador for Across the Etherium

His paranoia/pessimism and superstitiousness as described in the Voyage of Discovery art book is actually the result of some gone-undiagnosed-for-too-long severe OCD and PPD (paranoid personality disorder). His OCD symptoms manifest in the form of his superstitions and those scarily accurate predictions he makes. A lot of his superstitions mainly include believing in (and also being terrified of) supernatural creatures such as ghosts and spirits. He also firmly believes in luck and good/bad luck charms with one of his compulsions being that he wears a bunch of eyes of evil and jade and other charms under his clothes because he thinks that if he doesn’t wear them then he’ll get attacked spiritually. He does NOT play around with the idea of getting cursed and won’t risk it

Silver and his crew try their best to take every weird thing Onus talks about as true because like 85% of the predictions he’s made have actually happened before (ie if anyone remembers that choose your own adventure comic with the creature that disguises itself as a ship YEAH HE DEFINITELY PREDICTED THAT). The only thing that throws them off is that like 15% chance that what he just said was straight up bullcrap and won’t actually happen. It’s pretty much up to the crew whether or not they want to believe him because unfortunately Onus believes everything he says (and lot of the crew straight up don’t want him to say what he’s thinking because the amount of times something he’s said has come true makes it seem like he’s putting some kind of unintentional omen on them 😭)

Onus became a pirate because he was excommunicated by the Zandarian Church (I somewhat talked abt the native Zandarian religion in my Optoc post but whatever it has to do with the Forefathers and Naga ok ok) because they thought he was too mentally unwell to serve it… he was supposed to be successor and become a pastor because his family is highly involved in the Church but obviously religious zealots aren’t the most tolerant people. I imagine Silver sort of found him by accident after said excommunication and picked him up because having a hypervigilant guy around sounds like a good idea when you need a lookout, nobody really realizes the extent of his compulsions and religious trauma until after they integrated him into the crew

On a similar note, they (not Silver or Turnbuckle just the rest of the crew being assholes) began calling him Onus because of how annoyed they got by his conspiracy theory superstitious stuff and just saw it as a burden more than anything 😭 following most of his stuff actually coming true they calmed down the act but ontop of some of the crew just continuing to make fun of his theories because they think it’s funny- the name Onus stuck and nobody’s really called him by his actual name since (which I haven’t settled on but since the Optocs were colonized by the Russians it’s probably something like Sergei lol ❤️‍🩹)

Bringing up the predictions again, I think he predicted ALL of Treasure Planet. Like, he intrusively thought something along the lines of “we’re going to fail this and it’s going to be because something bad will happen” but the crew chose to ignore it because they didn’t want him putting an omen on the one thing they’ve been working towards their entire life🥹
