I figured I’d do a SNL character day this time around, since I don’t get to write for them much. and they don’t get nearly enough attention if you ask me!

“Peter!”
You say, laughing as he walks behind you, hands over your eyes.
“Is this really necessary?”
“Absolutely, it is. I want it to be a surprise.”
He leads you along the forest path a little ways further before stopping, taking one final look around the setup to make sure that everything’s still intact.
“Alrighty,”
His hands pull away from your eyes, revealing the beautiful hillside dinner picnic that he spent most of the afternoon setting up.
“Surprise.”
Your eyes widen and Aidy smiles at you as she bounces your daughter on her hip. Olivia’s dressed in a little red white and blue onesie with little embroidered fireworks on it. She’s also got a little metallic bow in her hair.
“Oh my...this is so, so amazing.”
You look up at your husband, smiling and wrapping your arms around his midsection.
“Thank you, darling.”
He smiles proudly, kissing your cheek.
“You’re so welcome, dearest. I know how hard you’ve been working and I wanted to treat you a little bit.”
Peter’s such a kind-hearted, incredible man; just one of the many, many reasons you fell in love with him. He’s alway looking out for you and keeps you grounded when things get stressful or busy at work.
Aidy hands Olivia to you.
“I picked out her outfit and bow. I don’t know if you know this, but dad’s the worst at picking baby clothes.”
You laugh, nodding.
“Oh yes, I’m fully aware at your father’s inability to select fashionable baby clothes. I made the mistake of trusting him to pick out some bathing suits for her at Target a few weeks ago...you should see the stuff he brought home.”
“Hey, I can hear you!”
He says, which makes you and Aidy giggle.
All three of you sit down on the blanket and you sit the baby down in your lap while Aidy and Peter begin pulling out the food from the basket and cooler. Of course, sitting on the ground doesn’t come without a bunch of grumbles from your husband.
“I’m getting too old for this shit.”
Peter mumbles, shaking his head as he awkwardly fumbles with his long limbs, awkwardly sitting down on the blanket.
“Gonna get arthritis one of these days ‘cause of you crazy youngsters.”
You shake your head, laughing as you reach over to rub his back.
“Are you gonna be alright, old man?”
“You’re well worth the pre-arthritis, my dear.”
He teases, smiling and reaching over for a kiss.
As the sun hides behind the horizon and the nighttime blackness spreads across the sky in its wake, you all eat the delicious spread, talking and laughing the evening away. Olivia has already begun to doze off in her carseat, prompting Peter to grab the pacifier and put it in her mouth before slipping the noise-cancelling earmuffs over her little ears.
The fireworks show begins around nine and you lay back on the picnic blanket with Peter, watching the various colors burst in the sky. He looks over at you, admiring the way the lights bounce off your skin.
“You know the fireworks are in the sky and not on me, right?”
You say, chuckling as you look over at him.
Peter smiles, reaching over to cup your cheek.
“Yeah, but I like this view much, much better.”
His thumb swipes across your cheek before he leans in and connects his lips to yours. You sigh into his mouth, eyes closing as your lips meld and move together in a complimentary rhythm.
Your hand comes up to run through his hair gently while his hand moves down to spread over your hip, giving it a soft squeeze.
Explosions and crackles are now mere background noises to the two of you, both wrapped up in each other’s embrace, in each other’s presence.
Aidy looks over and just rolls her eyes, making a fake gagging face before looking back up at the sky, trying to erase the sight of her dad making out with his wife from her memory.
Peter smiles against your lips as he pulls away slightly, forehead pressing against yours, lips still pressing quick kisses on your lips.
