It breaks my heart that Brody’s chosen name Evan became a source of trauma for him 😭

When he’s Mr Patrick does he have a new first name?

Does Mr. Patricks have a legal first name? Yes, he has to.

Is it Brody? No it can’t be for safety reasons.

Is it Evan? No it can’t be for emotional reasons.

And I can honestly say I don’t know. I know that cannonically Brody has had long, very thoughtful conversations about names with Aries because Aries chose their own name when they came out as NB.

Now we get a little meta, and we’ve got me over here, a cis girl, finding herself the author of a conversation between an Incredibly Traumatized boy and a NB person talking about what it means to choose your own name and names that cause painful memories.

It’d be a great, meaningful conversation but to be very raw I’m not currently in the place emotionally and time wise to give that conversation the research and care it deserves.

However I do know that Brody now finds more of his identity with the other titles that’s he’s worked for in his life.

Kayla and Aries’s Brother

I think those mean more to him because of what they represent. They’re the result of the work he’s put in to heal, to learn, to become a teacher and start a family and be active in his community. They’re representations of the life he’s build.

Mason can’t take any of those away.

what is mr. patricks' first name? i know brody's gone through a lot of them in his lifetime, i'm curious which one he finally ended up sticking with.

Hi hello I never answered this one cause I ... literally don't know. Like I've tried to figure it out before (leading to writing this piece) but even then I'm not sure. All his names have connotations to them.

He probably sat down with Aries and had a long talk about what it really means to change his name and pick one for himself.

I think he's going to keep this one a secret to just himself (and jenna of course)

I kinda fucked up Brody a lil because Mason trained the name he chose out of him. Like horribly. So when he get free again, I was like “would he go back to that name??? Would he stick with Brody??? (That’s how this drabble came to be where one of his kiddos picks his old name to be their new one)

But now Anon you’ve got me thinking that he should take Kayla and Aries’ last name but he’s one of those adults that uses the “Mr. Firstname” approach?

But that would mean his name is Patrick and….

Even after all this time, even after so many other memories, there are still things that hit me in the gut. A kid (god how old was he, 25?) in a suit jacket. He was probably going to a job interview, or maybe on a date. 

Sam wouldn’t even be that young anymore. 

But, 

The time that I spent waiting for him to walk through the door, for something to happen, to just not be alone. It was like it all came crashing back, like I was 18 again and so, so fragile. Like if I didn’t bend to his every whim I’d be left alone in the silence again. Jenna’s a saint, I swear she can read my mind some days and we left. 

note to self find her another pair of those socks she likes. 

Videochatted with Aries for a little bit, invited them over for dinner. It helped. 

Blake’s practice ends at 3:00, so I’ll pick them up and they need some new clothes so that’ll be fun. 

God I feel old whenever I see Blake’s style. I’m so far out of the loop. Maybe they’ll explain. 

Until then, I’m just here on the porch, listening to Kate practice her drums. For the first time, I’m happy for the noise.

Depends on who. If it’s someone he’s responsible for (his kids or his students) he’s gonna have a conversation with them. If not, he’ll let it go. No point in getting worked up over it.

They have a very big house. There’s quite a bit of property around it, too - I’d say an easy 40--100 acres. (they don’t use but like 5 of it. Rest is rented out to a neighbor that uses it as pasture or for hay. Being zoned agricultural can have lots of benefits.) They have ATV’s but Jenna insists everyone wear helmets they mostly wear them. 

They do have chickens tho

It is rare, but there are days were Mr. Patricks seems... a little off. A little quiet, a little subdued. He startles easily and “zones out”. Even rarer still is him having to call out of work, but it does happen. It’s not uncommon for him to just knock at someone’s door and just lay on their bed while they do homework on those days.
