Off slid his glasses, folded and tucked neatly into the collar of his shirt as Steve regarded the individual. Trim and immaculate in a suit with a smile like a shard of glass, like he had just stepped off Wall Street. In contrast, Steve in his cozy winter jacket and flannel was unquestionably overshadowed.
“ —Jeez, I hope it was civil. Social media and press these days… well, they’ve always been cutthroat, but there’s a special breed of cruelty with that power couple. ” Steve shrugged humourlessly. He tended to distance himself from the articles that popped up online, preferring to hear it from others than read with his own two eyes. There was nothing he could do about what was published on him, much like his family had been powerless to stop him from completing the novel that had destroyed their lives, as Shirley liked to peddle. (Their lives had been damaged long before that. By that standard, Steve’s contribution was insignificant – fiscally, it had been beneficial, but that was another ethical shouting match altogether.)
