Music for the Weekend: Trust Your Neighbor by MRC Riddims.

I guess I underestimated how far behind I was, apologies for not getting that business plan post up. I was severely backlogged on my inbox and wanted to take some time to respond to all of you that have asked questions. As many of you know, I tend to reply in full and try to give your questions my undivided attention. I’m pretty much caught up.

I wanted to leave you this weekend with a new jam by MRC Riddims, which is a new project from The Oktopus, one half of Lilith composers dälek. MC dälek and Oktopus are on indefinite hiatus (will the Lilith score be the final dälek composition? Will we ever again get our ears melted by dälek’s blistering wall-of-sound? You never know. One can hope.)

Right now both guys are exploring new sounds. MC dälek is exploring some new territory and knuckling up by reinventing classic hip-hop under the moniker of iconAclass (currently on tour with Sole in Europe); I listened to some of his new tracks and they’re ill as all fucking hell. Think Rakim processed through the world of Cannibal Ox, but so so SO much more street. It’s gonna be wild, can’t wait to share it.

Okto’s taken a different turn, spending time equally in Berlin and Harlem, and diving headfirst into emerging soundsystems, dub and dance music. It’s quite a departure from the classic dälek sound and then again not that much of a departure at all. There’s still that swelling, bleeding bass and grinding rhythms, but imbued with some classic Rhythm & Sound dub and Teledubgnosis textures. It’s quite a startling combination, and this track proves it.

I admire both men immensely for deciding to continue to experiment and discover new sounds. dälek will always be a pioneer in hip-hop, but to continue to innovate, sometimes you’ve got to take it all apart and start anew. That takes a lot of guts and a ton of confidence, and my brothers will do it, they’re the best in the business. I’m always excited to hear what they’ll come up with next, and I can’t wait to collaborate with them both again on my next film.

Music for the Weekend: 'Canto 8' by dälek, from the 'Lilith' Original Score.

At long last, I can give my readers a taste of the sonic world that Lilith is enveloped in. dälek have been hard at work doing the final mix on their original score for the film, and the results have been astounding. I'm really, really blown away by what these two guys have done. (p.s. listen to it with headphones or a system with good speakers and you'll get the full effect, with all that incredible low-end bass).

The hunt.

This composition is from a sequence featuring a hunt, where our plucky protagonist Sarah Wilson is being gunned down by a mysterious man in a gas mask. I wanted the sounds to have a tribal feel to it, a primal breakdown of all that is civil into evil. As the hunt progresses, Sarah begins to use her ingenuity and fights back. It's all in the film, but you can watch it in your head when you listen to this track. It's an amazing progression of a serene calm that is systematically destroyed. Coupled with Faroukh Mistry's amazing visuals, Chris Stangroom's incredible sound design, and the unhinged performances of Julia Voth and Karl Toth, I'm incredibly proud of what we achieved with this sequence.

And hats off to dälek. My brothers from another mother have been on point since they laid down their first note. This is really really cool stuff, and a new definition of horror film music.

Also of note; MC dälek's solo side project, iconaAclass, will dropping a new album and tour in the coming weeks. Check it out, it's some classic hip-hop blasted through the visionary filter of dälek!

New Music for the Weekend: My Time to Shine by MRC Riddims and Oddatee.

Been surrounded by music, and that's a great thing. Wanted to give you a taste of one of Dälek's side projects, MRC Riddims. The track, featuring Oddatee (who I swear is the new incarnation of Ol' Dirty Bastard and is one of the craziest cats I've ever met), is an example of Dälek's commitment to new sounds and ideas, and breaking away from their classic sound. It's a brave move, and their courage to move forward and experiment with something they've never tried before has inspired me greatly with my own craft.

Also, I wanted to announce that Patang, the lovely feature that I am an associate producer on, will be making its North American Premiere at the prestigious 2011 Tribeca Film Festival on April 21st. The multiple screening times throughout the festival are listed on the film's website. If you're in the New York area I strongly urge you to come out and support the film. It's a beautiful work that is the closest modern equivalent to Ozu's legendary Tokyo Story that I've ever seen. I will also be at some of the screenings (will let you know) so if any of my longtime readers want to drop in and say hi, you'll know where I'll be!
