This twisted tale of titillation and terror has clawed its way back from the grave for a limited run at the Off-Broadway Laurie Beechman Theatre, just in time for Halloween. So, if you're in the mood for a bit of mischief, a little mayhem, and some classic Burlesque entertainment, strap in (or rather, get ready to strap off)—because DEAD SEXY promises to be the wildest, weirdest, and deliciously naughty show you'll see this season. Gear up for DEAD SEXY: The Burlesque Thriller That’ll Raise the Dead.Cheeky HumorWith its unique fusion of horror, burlesque, and cheeky humor, DEAD SEXY has already garnered a cult following. After selling out its Off-Broadway runs in 2015 and 2016, the show is back from the dead for three performances, each more seductive and spine-chilling than the last. Part striptease, part vaudeville, part horror-comedy—DEAD SEXY is what happens when you mix the sensual art of burlesque with the campy theatrics of a B-movie horror flick like Role of the Vampire, Bloody Pit of Horror or the Awful Dr. Orlof. And it's every bit as outrageous as it sounds. Jonny Porkpie on stage in a scene from Dead Sexy at the Laurie Beechman Theatre. Photo by Don SpiroA Sinister Plot: Science, Seduction, and a Dash of the MacabreAt the center of this creepy cabaret is Doctor’s Evil Laboratory & Cabaret, a setting where science and seduction intertwine in the most unexpected and naughtiest ways. The plot is as devilishly absurd as it is deliciously fun: a mad scientist, his aberrant assistant, and a seductive intern are on a mission to revive a dearly departed lover from the underworld. But they don’t rely on your average resurrection rituals—oh no, these twisted geniuses use the power of Vaudvillian Burlesque to bring the dead back to life. It’s a night of flirty fiends and glamorous ghouls, where the dead don’t stay dead for long, and each act pushes the boundaries of what can and should be on stage. The plot, if we can even call it that, is more of a framework for the show’s main attraction: a series of outrageous, laugh-out-loud, funny burlesque performances that blend the grotesque with the glamorous along with absurd interviews and comedic references to iPhones, electric cars, and the presidential election.High Camp Meets LingerieYou’ll see everything from sinister striptease that sends chills down your spine to the mad scientist’s macabre love story that is as twisted as it’s tantalizing. Imagine an unhinged scientist reanimating the dead he killed to perform in his burlesque show on 42nd Street—then imagine what happens when the dead can’t help but undress. It's a night where high camp meets lingerie, and the result is a theatrical spectacle that will leave you howling—sometimes in mock fear, but mostly from laughter. The audience began laughing and clapping at the first gibe and didn’t stop until it was over. The Cast: Killer Talent, Undead AppealThe success of DEAD SEXY lies in its inventive premise and the stellar cast of burlesque stars who make the undead look drop-dead gorgeous. Jonny Porkpie, the show’s creator and star, plays the master of ceremonies and sinister scientist. Known as the “Burlesque Mayor of New York City,” Porkpie has spent years perfecting the art of burlesque comedy, and his performance in DEAD SEXY is the perfect combination of witty and risqué. His jokes are as sharp as his attire is irreverent, and his timing is impeccable—making him the ideal guide through this weird and wonderful world of undead iniquity. His assistant and foil, Tigger (with his mysteriously suspicious Dr. Frankenstein German accent), continually interrupts to ensure each experiment ends with a burlesque performance.Unique FlairSome of the most talented performers in the burlesque scene join him on stage, including Jo Weldon, Syn Sultress (who turns out to be a spy for the organization funding the sinister scientist’s experiments), and Tigger as his lab assistant Teegor (pronounced Igor)! These performers bring a mix of glamour, talent, and pure, unadulterated sex appeal and fun to the show. Special guest appearances are peppered throughout the run, with Peekaboo Pointe performing on October 12 and 19, Mr. Gorgeous showing off his considerable talents on October 19, and the tantalizing Maine Attraction closing the season on October 26. Each performer brings their unique flair to the stage, whether Peekaboo Pointe’s classic striptease skills, Mr. Gorgeous’s dashing good looks, acrobatic feats, Frankenstein monster monolithic monologue interview, or The Maine Attraction’s powerful stage presence.A Dash of Vaudeville - DEAD SEXY: The Burlesque Thriller That’ll Raise the DeadTogether, this killer cast delivers a series of equally shocking, hilarious, and undeniably seductive performances. You won’t just be watching performers relive the golden days of burlesque with a dash of vaudeville—you’ll be witnessing a masterclass in how burlesque can entertain, provoke, and evoke humor. Photo by Don SpiroThe Art of Tease (and Terror): Why Burlesque and Horror Go Hand in HandAt first glance, burlesque and horror might seem like strange bedfellows (though DEAD SEXY makes a strong case for why they should be), but the truth is these two genres share much common ground. Both rely on suspense, aim to push boundaries, and often play with taboos and social conventions. In burlesque, the performer teases the audience, building anticipation before finally revealing their body with carefully placed pasties, twirling tassel dervishes, and lingerie; in horror, the filmmaker teases the viewer, building tension before delivering the scare.Tease and TerrorIn DEAD SEXY, this relationship between tease and terror is pushed to its limits. Each act studies how to keep the audience on the edge of their seats through a dance performance or a comedic interview. And because this is burlesque, the focus is always on seduction—even when the performers play undead ghouls. The genius of DEAD SEXY lies in its ability to blend these two genres seamlessly. The horror elements never overshadow the parody, and the burlesque never feels out of place in the horror setting. Instead, the two genres complement each other, creating a show greater than the sum of its parts. It’s a night of thrilling burlesque and chilling humor, where the scares are just as satisfying as the burlesque.Jonny Porkpie: The Man Behind the MadnessAt the heart of DEAD SEXY is Jonny Porkpie, the mastermind behind the show and the “Burlesque Mayor of New York City.” Porkpie is a veteran of the burlesque scene, having produced and emceed countless shows over the years, including his internationally acclaimed burlesque gameshow, The Nayked Truth, which toured 30 cities in five countries. He’s also the founder of Pinchbottom Burlesque, which was named the best burlesque in NYC by both New York Magazine and The Village Voice.Porkpie’s sense of humor sets DEAD SEXY apart from other burlesque shows. His jokes are clever, often full of double entendres and playful wordplay that keeps the audience laughing long after the act has ended. And yet, Porkpie is just as comfortable playing with the show's darker elements, injecting just the right amount of comedic horror into each performance to keep the audience on their toes. His ability to blend humor, horror, and seduction into one cohesive show makes DEAD SEXY unique. It’s a rare talent to make audiences laugh, gasp, and blush in the same breath, but Porkpie easily pulls it off. Jo Weldon in a scene from Dead Sexy at the Laurie Beechman Theatre. Photo by Don SpiroWhat to Expect: A Night of Naughty Fun (with a Side of Screams)So, what can you expect when you step into the Laurie Beechman Theatre for DEAD SEXY? First, they have a great dining menu and drinks, comfortable seating, and excellent service. Most of all, be prepared for a lot of laughs and fun. The show is as much a comedy as a burlesque revue, and the performers aren’t afraid to ham it up on stage (rim shot humor without the drums!). In addition to cast members roaming and interacting with the audience, to the crowd's delight, three brave audience members joined in the fun on stage when I attended. Expect plenty of puns, jokes, and innuendos that will leave you chuckling long after the curtain has fallen.Of course, this is burlesque, so expect some skin. The performers may be playing undead characters, but they’re still as seductive as spooky. And while the striptease acts are undoubtedly spicy, they’re also incredibly inventive. When was the last time you saw talent-driven spinning tassels? Perhaps you remember Elvira, Mistress of the Dark? But at DEAD SEXY, you won’t just see traditional burlesque—you’ll see horror-themed performances that are as creative as they are titillating.HilariousBut don’t forget the horror! This is still a Halloween show, and plenty of spooky moments are sprinkled throughout. Whether it’s a blood-curdling scream, a surprise scare, or a gory (but hilarious) demise, DEAD SEXY knows how to keep the audience on the edge of their seat. And because the show blends horror and comedy so well, these moments are never too scary—they’re just scary enough to keep you guessing. One thing’s sure: by the night's end, you’ll be left breathless—not just from the scares. Why DEAD SEXY is the Perfect Halloween Treat - DEAD SEXY: The Burlesque Thriller That’ll Raise the DeadHalloween is all about celebrating the macabre, the mysterious, and the strange, and there’s no better way to do that than with a night of burlesque horror.
